About me and my therapy practice
I am an experienced and fully-qualified counsellor and psychotherapist, available to work with you online or in person. Before I became a therapist, I used to publish psychology books for one of the world's biggest academic publishers.
I recognise the pressures of today’s world and the difficulties we often face reconciling our inner needs with the demands of a busy life and the people we share it with. My experience includes work within the NHS and the Samaritans, where I have seen how easily we can lose ourselves and struggle to cope, and how important it is to find a person or place where we can speak openly and be heard without any fear of judgement. This is what I seek to provide: a safe environment where you can share whatever you wish to, and where you can reconnect with the kind of person you wish to be.
I understand that it’s difficult to know what to expect before you begin, and difficult to place your trust in an unknown person and an unfamiliar process. As your therapist, I will do my best to make those first steps as simple and transparent as possible.
I follow an integrative approach to therapy, meaning that I draw on a variety of theoretical perspectives to inform our work together. My attitude to this work is based on a deep respect for each person’s individuality and a genuine belief in their own natural potential to understand themselves and achieve whatever inner change they seek.
I aim to provide a welcoming and supportive environment, free from judgement or dictated solutions, and always with your interests as my primary priority.
Practice description
All our sessions are 50 minutes in length. There are various different ways we can work together, depending on your preference:
- face to face in person;
- or we can meet on Zoom for online sessions;
- or we can speak over the phone.
We can also be flexible and use a combination of these settings, or move from one to the other over time if that feels right to you.
Please feel free to contact me and ask any questions about what these various options might involve for you, and if/when I might be available to meet with you.
My first session
The first session represents an opportunity for you to get a feel for what it will be like to work with me.
It also offers me an opportunity to learn about you: you and your life at present, your relationships and your background, what it is that has brought you to therapy, and what you are hoping to achieve from the process. It's often hard to predict the course of our talk, but we will certainly end by going over some of the practical details of our arrangement, should you decide to return for further sessions.
Rest assured that there is absolutely no longer obligation involved in seeing me for a first session. Whether or not to continue beyond that will be up to you in due course.
