About me and my therapy practice

Are you suffering with loss, bereavement or anxiety?  You might be finding it difficult to get out of bed, feeling angry, withdrawn or have a sense of hopelessness.  Having a safe and compassionate space to talk with someone who will really listen, and hear you without judgement, could help you in your journey to find peace.

Your loss might be a bereavement, loss of relationship or career, or your anxiety is leading to a loss of self or identity.   I work in a calm, open and non judgemental way to gently encourage and support you as you explore your feelings and experiences and begin to sense what you might hope to change.

Your hopes for therapy may be to ease your pain, to cope with your emotions or behaviour in a different way when you feel overwhelmed.  Possibly to work through questions, meanings or feelings that you don't understand.  I have experience of counselling in person and online to meet both short and long term therapy intentions.

If you would like to discuss your needs for counselling, I offer a 20 minute free introductory call which can be arranged by emailing me.  You can also find more details about how I work via my website www.sjscounselling.co.uk.  Taking care of yourself and your needs often feels difficult in times of challenge.  Thank you for finding the strength to take the first step and let me know if you would like to speak further.  Take care of yourself.

Practice description

People start therapy for different reasons and I work confidentially and without judgement to provide a safe space to share your worries and fears, no matter how confusing they may be. Being heard properly for the first time can be an important step in the process of exploring things about ourselves that can be difficult to understand.

I counsel adult clients using an integrative approach, which means I draw on different theories and ways of working to encourage the most effective therapy for each individual client. I may also use creative tools in our sessions, such as imagery and sand tray, if you are comfortable with this. Our counselling sessions may include looking at past history, childhood, family or cultural experiences, as well as what is happening for you right now. As everyone is unique, an integrative approach honours the individuality of each client in a way that allows for flexibility within the counselling room and avoids a one size fits all approach.

During our sessions, I will encourage you to explore feelings, thoughts and behaviours, always at your own pace.  This can often feel overwhelming so it will be important that we talk about support strategies that can help between sessions and when we are together in the room.  Our counselling relationship is essentially one of mutual trust and respect. My role is to support and help you explore, together making sense of what you are struggling with, not to diagnose, advise or tell you what to do. You are the expert in yourself and therefore we will work together to find out what you wish to change, determine your goals for therapy, and how you can make those changes.

My first session

I offer a free introductory call which normally lasts around 20 minutes.  This will give you an opportunity also to ask me any questions you might have about the counselling process and to get an idea of how I work.  It will also give us both an opportunity to discuss the reasons that are bringing you to therapy now.  If you are comfortable to proceed, I will send you my welcome pack and we can arrange our first counselling session.  Each session will last 50 minutes unless previously agreed.
