About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I'm Chloe Johnstone, a dedicated psychotherapist with a passion for supporting individuals. I offer collaborative psychotherapy with my use of the Relational Approach, and my Integrative training allows me to draw from various approaches. Including, but not limited to:
- Transactional Analysis
- Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)
- Somatic Therapy
Relational psychotherapy emphasises the importance of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client. Together, we would consider the role of interpersonal dynamics and how past relationships, especially in early life, influence your current psychological state.
When requested, my approach can involve understanding of the nervous system and somatic practices, which allows me to work holistically, considering both psychological and physical factors which may be affecting well-being. This approach is appears to be particularly useful for people who are self-aware but struggle to make effective change.
Psychotherapy for Neurodiverse Individuals
I aim to provide a safe and inclusive environment where neurodiverse individuals can explore their experiences and develop strategies to enhance their overall well-being. DBT's emphasis on emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness can be particularly beneficial for neurodiverse individuals.
I'm dedicated to offering psychotherapy that is both empathetic and informed, ensuring that individuals receive the support they need to thrive. Together, we will embark on the journey to get you where you'd like to be.
Credentials
I am registered with the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy), which ensures that I follow a strict code of ethics and maintain the highest professional standards. I hold professional insurance.
Practice description
Throughout my psychotherapy journey, I've delved into a range of psychological and counselling domains, including child development, social psychology, cognitive and biological psychology, as well as advanced counselling skills and the psychology of health and well-being. My commitment to learning and self-improvement has allowed me to acquire a well-rounded understanding of the field.
I have witnessed the effectiveness of psychotherapy in action; my clients often guide the direction of our sessions, and I am consistently moved by their capacity for self-reflection, both on themselves and their connections with others and the broader world. To me, psychotherapy is a dynamic, two-way relationship, where I actively engage with the process rather than just assuming the role of a passive listener. By attuning to my clients' evolving needs in the moment, I can select the most effective responses to support their growth and well-being.
Working with Trauma
My approach is well-suited for individuals who've experienced trauma. It provides tools for emotional regulation and distress tolerance, fostering resilience and control.
This holistic perspective allows us to address trauma's impact on the nervous system and work towards healing and well-being, providing individuals with a path towards recovery.
Support for Life Changes and Grief
In times of significant life changes and profound grief, I offer a compassionate and empathetic approach. I provide a safe space where your emotions are embraced, and we explore the emotional aspects of these experiences together.
I believe that the heart of therapy lies in genuine human connection. It's not just about techniques; it's about the relationship we build as we navigate these transformative moments. I'm here to listen, understand, and support you, offering comfort and guidance for healing and personal growth in the face of life's challenges and loss.
My first session
I acknowledge that taking the step to seek therapy can be challenging, and this space is dedicated to addressing any worries or uncertainties you may have about the therapeutic process. Our first meeting serves as an opportunity to ensure clarity and establish a therapeutic contract.
During this initial session, we will cover essential topics, including:
Confidentiality: I will assure you that what you share remains strictly private unless there is an immediate risk of serious harm to yourself or others.
Fees and Availability: We will discuss session fees, availability, and scheduling to ensure that you have a clear understanding of the practical aspects of therapy.
Commitment to Therapy: We will explore the commitment required for successful therapy, establishing mutual expectations and goals.
This comprehensive contracting process fosters confidence in your therapeutic journey and ensures professionalism in addressing your therapeutic needs. In our initial session, we explore your experiences and build a therapeutic relationship. Your questions and concerns are actively encouraged, prioritizing your comfort. This session also gathers information about your life, past therapies, and goals.
I encourage my clients to become attuned to their body's signals and sensations. The initial session provides an excellent opportunity to practice this awareness, as taking this significant step may trigger physical sensations or emotions.
It's vital to underscore that you maintain complete control of your therapeutic journey. After our initial session, the decision to continue or not rests entirely with you, and there is no obligation to do so. My role is not that of an all-knowing expert but rather a supportive companion on your path to personal growth and healing. Your consideration of me as your partner on this journey is greatly appreciated.
