About me and my therapy practice
I see the therapeutic process as offering a combination of support and open exploration and, when we have established a shared understanding of your concerns, providing opportunities for you to further explore and challenge your own assumptions or behaviours.
The foundation of this process is establishing a working relationship which is respectful, open and responsive. It works best when there is a sense of equality and freedom to express ourselves without fear of criticism and with a confidence that what we bring can be fully explored. The BACP code of ethics provides a good guide to how you can expect to be treated during a therapeutic process.
I see clients for short term work for specific issues and for longer arrangements to explore more complex or intractable difficulties.
Practice description
I have over twenty five years experience of working with a wide range of clients, addressing many different types of difficulty, including anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, early life traumas and relational difficulties.
I am interested not just in addressing the distress that you might bring to therapy, but also in focusing on helping you discover more of your personal resourcefulness, creativity and resilience
As we share and express difficult experiences, our connection to others, and to our own resources, becomes clearer and facilitates a fuller expression of who we can become.
My initial training was in Gestalt Therapy, and I have integrated additional trainings, such as recognising and working with trauma, into my work. My approach is to attend closely to what is currently difficult for you and to help you see any patterns in how you relate to your difficulties. We can then explore how you are making sense of what is happening for you, and help you devise and try out alternative ways of responding to the experiences that you are struggling with.
As well as having a small number of spaces for face-to-face sessions I offer counselling via the phone or online. If you want to have an initial conversation to see if this might suit you, please get in touch and will get back to you with some suggested times to speak.
My first session
In an initial one hour session we can explore your concerns and you can get a sense of whether this might be a helpful process for you. If this feels right for you we can agree a regular weekly time to speak and to review the arrangement after a number of weeks. If this doesn’t feel right for you I may be able to help you to look for other kinds of support.
