About me and my therapy practice
I offer Humanistic Counselling (a blend of Person Centered, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis approaches), which emphasises the value of the therapeutic relationship. I endeavour to create a safe, long term counselling relationship in a supportive environment where you are able to explore whatever you need to - in your own time - facilitating change and the natural human tendency towards growth. I am an embodied practitioner, meaning I am curious about the way emotions are reflected in the physical body and I will honour this aspect of self as well as your thought processes and emotional expression. I am also a (retired) complementary therapist with over 10 years experience, specialised in women's health, which informs my approach and understanding. I have several years' experience as a therapist for animals (mainly horses and dogs) and where appropriate can combine their therapeutic presence in the session.
Practice description
I work in private practice based in Richmond (Greater London/Surrey), in two 'locations'; on Zoom, and outdoors in Richmond Park to combine the therapeutic effects and resources of nature.
Sessions are 50 minutes long, weekly at the same time each week, and I work with adults aged 18 or over.
Outdoor sessions are conducted in all weather, with the exception of extreme weather conditions which might create a risk to life.
Zoom sessions may not be suitable for everyone - we will discuss this on an initial call.
I offer a group support and education course focussed on anxiety, meeting weekly for 8 weeks with varying start dates throughout the year.
Any contracts, any agreements, and any non-contractual obligations arising out of or in connection with my services shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, English law.
My first session
Before you and I meet for the first time, I will offer you a no-obligation and no-charge phone conversation so that you can get an idea of my style and assess my suitability for your needs, and so I can assess whether counselling with me might be suitably supportive for you. To help me assess this, during the call I will ask about your reasons for seeking counselling, and ask about any prior experiences with counselling or psychological health services, and what sort of support networks you might have around you. I will explain my contractual terms and fees and see if our schedules align for sessions. If it seems like there is potential for you and I to be a good match to work together, we can arrange an initial session.
Before we meet, I will send you a copy of the BACP Ethical Framework to which I adhere, my initial contract (usually for 6 exploratory sessions including the initial session), and my privacy policy, for you to consider in advance of our initial session. I will ask you to return a signed copy of my privacy policy before the initial session.
When we meet for the first time I will ask more specific questions about your history, and I will gather some personal and sensitive information (to be kept in accordance with Data Protection legislation) including your GP and emergency contact details, date of birth, address and contact details, any relevant medical conditions and medications, and psychological diagnostic history. This is recorded to assist me in fulfilling my duty of care towards you and to ensure I can get appropriate help to you in an emergency (even if we only meet this once). I may take some notes during this initial session.
Towards the end of the session, I will ask how you feel about continuing further. You can take time think about this, you don't need to decide on the spot. If you do decide to continue, I will require a signed copy of my contract before the 2nd session.
