About me and my therapy practice
I am a warm and compassionate integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor - specifically trained to work with children and young people - with over 20-years’ experience supporting children and adolescents with a range of social, emotional and mental health needs.
My training as an integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor means I can tailor therapy or counselling to the needs of the individual. However, experience has taught me that therapeutic models are secondary to the importance of a relational approach.
It is the relationship between myself and a child or young person that is central to therapy being helpful and I offer an environment where children and young people can explore their thoughts and feelings - if these are accepted as neither right nor wrong but simply a reflection of their current state-of-mind, this will help them to communicate freely and improve their own reflective capacity. Children and young people can sometimes struggle to communicate through words alone, and I can introduce the use of creative activities, and play to help with therapeutic exploration and support.
Since completing my diploma in psychotherapeutic counselling in 2018, I have provided therapy for children and young people in schools, for Brighton & Hove and Surrey local authorities, a counselling service, and in private practice.
My positions in schools and in care settings has given me a wealth of experience of working with children and adolescents from a multitude of backgrounds, presenting with issues including: anxiety, low mood, trauma, bereavement, fragmented family relationships, self-harm, bullying and friendship issues and the impact of social media.
I also provide consultations for parents and carers who would like a space to think about their child, any difficulties they may be struggling with and how best to support them.
If you would like to learn more about me and the services I offer, do not hesitate to get in touch for an informal discussion.
Practice description
I have a small private practice, based at Brighton Consulting Rooms, near Preston Park, and Hayward's Heath Counselling Centre in West Sussex. Online/remote therapy can be discussed for older teenagers, but for young children I can only offer face-to-face appointments.Insurance:
I am approved to provide psychotherapy/counselling by Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva and Vitality.
My first session
Typically I will have an initial consultation with a child or young person's parent or primary carer. We can discuss whether it is appropriate for the child to be present for this, but with older children and teenagers it usually is. Young people in their late teens may wish to attend an initial consultation without a parent or carer present - this is usually appropriate.
Initial consultations last approximately 50 minutes, while there will be some questions I need to ask and some form filling, they are largely an informal opportunity for you to get to know me and for me to understand more about what you need and how I might be able to help.
What I can help with
Abuse, ADD / ADHD, Anger management, Anxiety, Autism spectrum, Bereavement, Depression, Loss, Mood disorder, Neurodiversity, Relationships, Self-harm, Sex-related issues, Stress, Trauma
