About me and my therapy practice
I work with children and young people, specialising in anxiety and OCD. I help them learn new skills and attitudes to improve their ability to handle difficult thoughts and feelings.
I help young people’s worlds become bigger
Mental health challenges, and especially anxiety and OCD, encroach on their lives, make them avoid and make their world smaller. They disconnect from themselves, the things they care about and the people that matter to them. They underestimate their strengths and resources, overestimate life’s challenges and get stuck.
Like riding a bike or learning to swim, it’s more helpful, and often easier, to build skills to manage mental health in childhood than in adulthood. I help young people step into things that are unknown, uncertain and may feel scary or difficult so they can connect with and grow the strengths and qualities they need to have a happy, healthy and fulfilling life.
Supporting young people and their families is my passion and I’ve spent the last 24 years doing it
I’m an Accredited Psychotherapist with the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy and am supervised by leading international experts in the field of adolescent mental health.
As well as being a therapist, I’ve worked as a special needs teacher, SENCO, head teacher of special needs schools and a school mental health counsellor, with all my roles being specialised in children with mental health challenges.
I’ve worked with young people from diverse backgrounds, cultures and identities with a variety of neurodevelopmental differences and mental health challenges.
I also have two sons who keep me learning, falling, adjusting and growing as a parent.
Growing my skills and experience is something I value
Some of the approaches I'm trained in include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Exposure & Response Prevention, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Family Therapy, Systemic Therapy and Trauma-Focused CBT.
Practice description
Working with me is practical, collaborative and active
I’ll help your child learn new skills and attitudes to improve their ability to handle difficult thoughts and feelings so they can do more of what matters to them and make more room for connection. I’ll help them to:
- Understand the patterns that are holding them back
- Learn and practice counterintuitive adjustments that will help them
- Get more resilient by doing stuff even when they’re uncomfortable or unsure
- Discover what’s important to them and actively approach and care about it
I regularly review sessions with your child to make sure we’re always using the therapeutic approaches that are most supportive and effective for them.
Parents are part of the solution
Anxiety and OCD aren’t an individual experience. They impact the whole family and it's important for you to be involved for the best outcomes. This might look like joining your child’s session, joining part of a session, collaborating with your child between sessions or individual sessions for you. Knowing when and how to step in or step back to support your child when they’re struggling is extremely helpful and I’ll support you with that.
If your child doesn’t feel ready for therapy, I can work directly with you. I’ll coach you around how to support them using therapeutic frameworks that help clarify your role and optimise skill building, resilience and growth for your child.
