About me and my therapy practice
I work both in-person and on-line.
Do you feel stuck, anxious or depressed? Is life challenging? I offer a welcoming space to look at what is going on in your life. I am an experienced therapist and believe that being really heard and seen can be transformative for all of us.
I am calm and compassionate and help clients to look at long-standing behaviour that is no longer helpful, your upbringing or past trauma. Or you may wish to look at a current specific issue or relationship. Perhaps you simply wish to understand yourself better. I will work with you at your pace. I bring a warmth and curiosity to my work but also humour.
Who I work with
I appreciate the impact of isolation, depression and feeling different. I particularly work with:
Social anxiety
Depression, anxiety, panic attacks
Relationship issues, in relation to couples, your family, your children
Cultural difference
Addiction, (esp. gambling)
Abuse, self-harm, suicidal feelings
Attachment, family relations, narcissism
Trauma, often using somatic/bodywork. PTSD
Men's issues - anger, addiction, the expectation of men to be strong and unemotional.
Mid-life
Women's issues: pregnancy, postnatal, fertility, menopause. I have a lot of experience with issues related to pregnancy and postnatal period, childbirth and menopause and HRT (oestrogen, testosterone)
Chronic pain and health anxiety
Neurodiversity, ADHD in adults
Boarding School survivors
I am interested in exploring how the care that we received as a child, or lack of it (for example with narcissistic parents) impacts on us. I work increasingly with ADHD and neurodiversity in women.
Practice description
Where I work and cost
I work from my therapy room in Alma Road, Clifton, Bristol BS8. This is a quiet, private space. I understand that it is daunting finding a counsellor so we can meet for an initial session without commitment.
I work mainly from a psychodynamic perspective, working longterm with clients through talking therapy and looking at how their past relationships and experiences have impacted on how they are now.
I also use other creative techniques such as drawing, Gestalt chair work, writing, bodywork, if it feels appropriate. I sometimes use CBT and other tools.
I like to work with dreams and archetypes too, and attend a monthly Jungian dream group. I try to see beyond what a client says and understand the real meaning for them in their life context.
Other Information About Me
I have worked in a university student counselling service, an agency for gambling addiction and a psychiatric ward.
I abide by the BACP's ethical values. I hold a Diploma in Integrative Counselling from University of the West of England. I have a foundation certificate in Group Analysis.
I feel it is important to have my own weekly therapy and supervision so that I can really be present for my clients.
My first session

About me and my therapy practice

However, online I also accept more clients for short-term work as well, to tackle an immediate, pressing issue. This might involve more directive therapy and worksheets, homework etc.
I understand that it is daunting finding a counsellor so we can meet for an initial session without commitment.
I work mainly from a psychodynamic perspective, looking at how your past relationships and experiences have impacted on how you are now. I also work from the idea that we have different parts, as in Internal Family Systems.
I also use other creative techniques such as drawing, writing, bodywork, if it feels appropriate. I sometimes use CBT and other tools, such as Gestalt chair work.
I work with individual adults aged 18 and up. I ask for a weekly commitment to therapy and we will fix a regular time to meet.

My first session
In a first session I will take a lot of notes about you and ask about family history, relationships so that I can make an assessment of what is going on for you. I might ask you to draw a family tree. In other sessions I do not take notes.
After the first session, I will ask you to sign my agreement which asks you to give 48 hours' notice of cancellation. If you give less notice I will try and offer an alternative slot but if I can't I will still charge you. This agreement also clarifies my confidentiality policy and abidance by GDPR.
