About me and my therapy practice
Choosing a therapist can be daunting, especially when you may be anxious and at a low ebb. If you’ve had no experience of working with one before it can be difficult to know who to choose. One of the most important things is to choose someone you feel comfortable with.
My approach is to provide a warm, safe and confidential space for reflection; allowing you to explore your difficulties without judgement. You could feel there is no one to share these with or you may find it too difficult to talk to family and friends because you want to protect them or they may be too close to the problem. I will be your advocate, but not take over or direct you to solutions, helping you find your own answers and ways forward with what might be difficult relationships, troubling internal conflicts or challenging life circumstances.
My approach is Integrative underpinned by Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, Transpersonal and Neuroscience modalities. This broad range is helpful for clients to understand why they have the emotions and physical reactions they do, and to move away from feelings like anxiety, depression or self-blame and to find greater sense of purpose.
For 17 years, I worked in Relationship Management in the Corporate world. However, my family legacy of trauma, anxiety and premature death led me to seek therapy. This caused a shift in my priorities and led to my change of career.
I work with adults from age 18 upwards around a wide range of issues. I was previously a counsellor at the Mulberry Centre, supporting those affected by cancer or bereavement, and Kingston Women’s Centre.
My first session
The length of the therapy usually depends upon how deep-seated the issue is. However it is your choice to decide how long you would like to continue for. Sometimes people arrive already knowing they want to have long term therapy.
I will endeavour to be empathic, non-judgemental and genuine to create a relationship where you can begin to feel safe and open up. This is often a relief when we’ve needed to bottle things up from family and friends or have no one else to share things with.
This is an opportunity for you to explore yourself, what troubles you and how this may have been shaped by your past or current circumstances. Many of the things that keep us stuck are out of our awareness and so the aim will be to find a safe, measured way to explore this. To facilitate this process I offer listening, support and comfortable challenge. And if you’re interested we can assist the talking therapy by working with art, poems or stories.
Although there are no guarantees with therapy, this process creates insight that we can then use together working in partnership to make meaning of what you’ve been experiencing. Some problems may disappear or neutralise, some may diminish but won’t ever go away. The aim of therapy as Jung says: ‘Is not to fix our problems but to outgrow them’.
