About me and my therapy practice
In these trying times there can be little time to stop and think and for many people anxiety levels are higher than usual. Counselling provides the opportunity take some time to reflect in a safe, non-judgemental environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings and express them openly. When life gets difficult we tend to keep ourselves busy, without taking the time to process our thoughts and feelings. Unprocessed thoughts and feelings stay inside us until they are expressed and released. They can build up, weigh us down and cause problems without us realising it, causing anxiety and depression, low confidence, loss of self and low self esteem.
Most of us struggle with something at some point, and tend to get by by telling ourselves that there are people much worse off than we are, and that we should just get on with it. We don't give ourselves permission to feel, or the same compassion that we give to others. Sometimes we avoid what we know we have to face because it is too hard to go there.
Maybe you want to finally come to terms with your past. Maybe you are fed up with thinking about the past and want to look towards the future. Maybe you want to discover who you are now and what you want from life. Maybe you already know but are not sure how to get there. Or maybe there is something you have been carrying around for years that you would like to finally be rid of.
Counselling helps with all these situations, the aim being for you to gain insight and understanding, and to feel much lighter. It can be life changing when your thoughts become clearer and your mood starts to lift.
Practice description
My approach is warm, realistic, positive and professional. I will work with your values, beliefs and view of the world. I will work with your uniqueness, and will manage your thoughts and feelings safely and ethically.
I am an integrative counsellor so I use techniques from many different types of counselling. Of course the most important technique is listening, but sometimes I may ask questions to explore feelings or words on a deeper level. I work in a person centred way, which means that your therapy is led by you and your needs. The aim is to get to the root of the problem and gain a deep understanding of you and your experiences. Gaining a deep understanding of something can bring a sense of control over it. Sometimes we may look at strategies from other approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, to help with negative or unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviour. The aim of counselling is for you to make your own choices and to live your life by your own rules, values and beliefs.
Counselling can be useful for gaining acceptance, dealing with loss and recovering from trauma. It can help with problem solving and give you the confidence to deal with difficult situations. It can help you to understand yourself and others in a healthier way. Counselling can also provide you with skills and techniques which you can apply to new situations, building resilience and self-confidence.
We all have busy lives so I am flexible about length and frequency of sessions. At the end of the session I will ask you if you would like to book again and if so when. I offer telephone or video call sessions.
My first session
I offer a free initial thirty minute consultation which will help you to decide whether counselling with me is right for you. In this session, we will get to know each other a little, look at what you want to achieve from therapy, and I will explain the approach I would take with you. I will then ask you to think about whether you wish to go ahead and to let me know if you do.
If you have never had counselling before this session can be useful for you to find out what it is all about. It is important for you to take the time to find the right counsellor for you because, it is all about the relationship.
