About me and my therapy practice

I work primarily with people experiencing anxiety, especially when this is linked to feelings of low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence. I also help individuals and couples who are having relationship problems.

I make every effort to ensure that my sessions are relaxed, friendly and informal while still being purposeful and worthwhile. When you come for counselling with me I want you to feel that you are being listened to and fully heard. I also want you to feel secure enough to be able to talk honestly and openly without thinking you are being judged.

For anxiety related issues and panic I will work on helping you to feel more calm, clear-thinking and in control. Together we will address the causes of your anxiety and develop strategies to deal better with its physical and emotional aspects.

Where relevant I will also explore with you the ways your anxiety is affected by feelings of low self-esteem or lack of self-worth.

In dealing with self-esteem, self-worth and confidence we will explore the sources of your feelings and beliefs about yourself to gain insight into the factors that have contributed to your negative self-image.

We will work on developing your feelings of self-acceptance and help you to trust in yourself rather than worrying excessively about what others think of you.

If you are an individual or a couple with relationship issues I will help you to gain insight into the causes of your difficulties and to improve your understanding of yourselves and the ways you relate to each other.

Relationship sessions can help to enhance the emotional quality of your partnership, to develop feelings of trust, empathy and openness,  and to improve the ways you handle conflict and communicate. If need be they can also help you decide whether you’re in the right relationship and how to move on with your life.

Other areas I work with include low-mood, loss, stress and existential concerns around such issues as mortality, 'time of life' worries and spirituality.

Practice description

I run my private counselling practice from my home in Whitley Bay, within easy walking distance of Whitley Bay and Cullercoats Metro Stations. Convenient on-road parking is available immediately outside.

I have a comfortable consultation room which provides a quiet, confidential space for your counselling sessions.

My practice is 5 minutes walk from the seafront and nearby cafes, providing an ideal location for 'walk and talk' therapy or simply a place for you to relax before or after sessions.

As well as being a Person Centred counsellor I integrate techniques and approaches from other areas of practice including: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness approaches, Psychodynamic and Holistic Therapies, depending on the needs of my clients.

My first session

I offer a free half-hour initial consultation for one-to-one counselling. This gives us both the opportunity to see how we feel about working together and whether my counselling approach is right for you.

You will be able to tell me about what brings you to counselling, the kind of help you are looking for and what you wish to achieve. I can provide further information about the counselling process and answer any questions you may have.

You can then decide in your own time whether you wish to proceed. Subsequent sessions last one hour and cost £50 per appointment.

For couples the initial consultation lasts for one hour and fifteen minutes and cost £65.

It is an opportunity for you to give me information about your relationship, your reasons for coming for counselling and what you wish to achieve. It will also enable us to assess whether couples counselling would be the right way forward for both of you.

Follow-up sessions last for one hour and are charged at the same rate as the initial consultation.
