About me and my therapy practice

I am Lucinda Stirton, a qualified Therapeutic Counsellor and registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I graduated with a BSc Psychology from the University of Plymouth in 2010 and completed my Level 4 Diploma in therapeutic Counselling at New College, Swindon in 2013. I am currently studying the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology at UWE and have 8 years’ experience in the NHS. For my private practice, I am based in Swindon and Devizes, as well as offering Skype, email and telephone sessions. I have availability on weekday evenings and some weekends.

Life can be difficult, and humans are complex beings. It’s not surprising we can end up feeling unhappy, lost or overwhelmed. Dealing with emotions is an important part of self-care and counselling can equip you with the awareness and tools to be kinder to yourself. People often choose to have therapy when things go wrong, but you don’t have to be in crisis to benefit. I am passionate about providing supportive, compassionate and professional therapy where you can explore any problems you’re having in a safe and confidential environment without judgement.

Practice description

I work with a broad range of issues including stress, depression, anxiety (including OCD, social anxiety, phobias and general anxiety), low self-esteem, anger, bereavement and trauma. I have a special interest in supporting women during the perinatal period (before, during and after pregnancy) and am currently conducting my doctoral thesis into new-motherhood experiences. I strongly support health professionals maintaining their own wellbeing, hence offering a discount for all NHS staff.

I will listen to your story and work with you to understand yourself better and make positive changes. I recognise the strengths, knowledge and experience that comes with your individual story, whoever you are. I am an integrative therapist, which means I draw from several psychological models to deliver therapy that is the best fit for you and what you hope to gain. My main therapeutic approaches are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Psychodynamic therapy. I also incorporate Compassion Focused Therapy and Mindfulness techniques in my work.

My first session

I offer a free 15-minute telephone consultation initially for all prospective clients. This is an opportunity to briefly chat about the main issues you'd like to address in therapy and check I'm the right therapist to help. If we both agree we'd be a good fit working together, then within our first sessions we will contract our work, begin exploring issues further and create your goals and initial plan for therapy.
