About me and my therapy practice
Welcome to this brief outline. Reaching out for help doesn’t come easily to many of us. Especially when we’re trying to contend with (maybe struggle with) something very personal. I acknowledge the effort you’ve made to seek out therapy, at what might be a tough time for you.
At the core of my approach is providing each client with empathy, acceptance, care, and genuineness. We work together to reduce the emotional difficulties you are living with. Each person has within them unique resources and insight and part of our process is to bring those to be central to the client’s healing and emotional well-being.
The work has a framework of boundaries. Within that, work will include looking ‘out there’ (what is happening in the client’s life, including his or her relationships) and ‘back then’ (how the past has shaped who the client is today). The relationship that develops between my client and I is always very important, with trust and safety as cornerstones of that relationship.
I use a number of counselling approaches in my work with clients. As well as talking therapy ( such as Transactional Analysis) we can use creative work, if the client is comfortable with this, including drawing, sand-tray, guided imagery, mindfulness and relaxation techniques.
An initial face-to-face consultation is free of charge. This is an opportunity for you to get a feel of how we could work together and to ask questions. I use beautiful, quiet counselling rooms in Wylam and also in Hexham, both with easy parking.
Practice description
I have been in private practice for ten years in the North East. I've worked with clients aged from 19 to 85.
I work two days each week, Mondays and Wednesdays.
I am fortunate to work with amazing men and women clients. However the majority of my work is with men.
My first session
The initial conversation is relaxed. I'm told I'm quite good at putting people at their ease, as much as that's possible given the distress the person might be in. It is your time to talk about what has been happening. I listen and take it all on board. I might then offer some impressions of how your situation might be seen therapeutically, and how a therapeutic approach to resolving the problems might look.
You will gain a good idea of what I'm like and how I work, and so get a feel for if we could work well together. You don't have to decide there and then about how to proceed. Often people want to sleep on it and talk it over with someone else before deciding to start work, or not. There is no charge for this hour.
