About me and my therapy practice
I work as an integrative psychotherapist, and an accredited EMDR practitioner, offering therapy to clients experiencing a range of difficulties:
- depression,
- anxiety,
- post-traumatic stress,
- sexual addiction/sexual compulsivity,
- intimacy disorder,
- alcohol addiction,
- other forms of process addiction (gambling, shopping, eating, internet use, etc)
- codependency issues,
- difficulties with self-confidence and/or self-esteem,
- difficulties in establishing relationships of trust with others,
- fear of rejection and abandonment,
- anxiety in social situations,
- complex bereavement,
- difficulties in forming or sustaining relationships.
For many people, the emotional, cognitive and/or relational difficulties they experience in their current day to day lives stem from past experiences of relational trauma, either in childhood or adulthood.
Relational trauma can occur due to:
- physical, mental, emotional, and/or sexual abuse,
- emotional neglect and/or abandonment,
- emotional incest,
- domestic abuse,
- spiritual abuse,
- bullying.
- being the victim of violent crime,
- being involved in a serious or life-threatening accident or other life-event,
- traumatic bereavement,
- being involved in or witnessing traumatic events during military service,
- repeatedly witnessing traumatic events in the course of work (police officers, paramedics, nurses, doctors, social workers, prison officers, etc).
I also offer trauma/attachment-focused therapy for clients experiencing difficulties with sexual addiction/sexual compulsivity (also understood as intimacy disorder).
Practice description
Client's can expect a warm, respectful approach to exploring their current difficulties, and a collaborative, goal-oriented approach to achieving specific desired outcomes.
A foundational element of my work is developing a strong therapeutic alliance with the client, in order to provide a safe relational context in which I can offer the client warmth, acceptance, and unconditional regard. In the context of this therapeutic alliance, I will then work with each client to explore current difficulties, and how these are impacting on his/her wellbeing. This may include exploring current or past experiences or events in the client's life which may have contributed to the emergence of client's current difficulties.
I work to establish clear expectations with clients about what therapy can help them achieve, but also about how the therapeutic process works. For me, therapy is essentially a collaborative process between two experts: the client is and remains the expert in their own feelings, their own experiences, and in the goals they want to set for therapy; while the therapist brings a degree of expertise in the therapeutic modalities that he/she places at the service of the client.
Depending on the client's needs, I may offer psycho-education in the form of information from one or some of the theories that guide my therapy practice (namely, relational theory, person-centred theory, attachment theory, and trauma theory). The aim here is to reduce the stigma associated with emotional and mental health issues, and to normalise the client's emotions / thoughts/ behaviours within the context of their own unique life experiences.
This will then lead to working collaboratively with the client to establish concrete goals for therapy, and identifying the specific therapeutic interventions required to enable the client achieve these goals.
