About me and my therapy practice
Counselling sessions provide a time for your child to explore their feelings. Sessions are a place where children and young people can think about what is happening in their lives and discover new ways to cope.
I am a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and I specialise in working with children and young people. I am a member of the Association for Counselling and Therapy Online (ACTO) and the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP).
Counselling offers a child or Young Person that is experiencing emotional distress the opportunity to heal and grow by exploring their difficulties and discover a new way to emotionally navigate the present.
The hope is that counselling will build capacity, capability and confidence through the enabling of emotional expression and the development of helpful strategies.
Practice description
Sessions are child led, in terms of the focus, pace and style of the work which are all in response to each individual. I take the time to find out what life is like for your child and consider what they are trying to convey about their life through their own particular ‘solutions’. I believe that what children say is only one dimension of understanding what a child actually means, and what they do and their patterns of relating are also a means of communication. Although I am a Person Centred Counsellor, I often incorporate practice from Solution Focus Therapy with clients that might benefit from direct and tangible change.
My first session
Children and Young People can feel very nervous about starting counselling. Meeting a new adult to talk about feelings can be a daunting experience. I take the time to get to know each client so that I can use activities and strategies that really suit them. If they are comfortable and feel that it is a space to explore, then they will be able to think, feel, change and grow.
I work with children in person who are 8+, and 13+ online
Sessions are £60 per session.
Before the first session I will find out more background information about the client and the family. This will help me understand the hopes of the work and how best to engage with your child.
Working online involves some challenges which are important to think about. Sessions need to be in a private room with a closed door and that others in the household know not to disturb. It is important to use password protected internet and the device used has firewalls and virus protection. Also be vigilant about security systems being bypassed through spyware or code breakers. The platform used to communicate is Zoom. Please consider the terms and conditions of this platform before proceeding.

About me and my therapy practice
Counselling provides the opportunity to think and feel about difficulties and challenges in your life. It gives the times and space to heal and grow through a relationship that allows you to explore problems and discover how you emotionally navigate the present, and what this means for you.
One of the aims of counselling is to help you to move forward and to reflect on the distance that there is between the idea that you have about who you are, and the person that you could be. Counselling can help you close the gap between the two.
As a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor I can help you to explore your experiences and the thought process' that you use to make decisions or evaluations about issues. This support can help you to discover a way forward.
Practice description
There is equality within the therapeutic relationship that is not assumed or implied, but care is taken to build it. Counselling is a place where you can really be yourself without façade and accept yourself and your personal experience.
For constructive change to happen you will experience a consistent attitude of unconditional regard. I will strive to stay in tune with your experience; willing to be close even in your pain and distress.
A therapeutic relationship is one which you are accepted and valued, but to accept yourself you need to know yourself, and this discovery can happen in relationship with an authentic, self-aware person who wants to travel the journey by your side.

So how does online counselling work?
Working online involves some challenges which are important to think about.
Physical safety: You need to be careful that someone in your home does not overhear what is being said in sessions. Sessions need to be in a private room with a closed door and others in the household know not to disturb.
Electronic safety: It is important to use password protected Wi-fi and your device has firewalls and virus protection. Also be vigilant about security systems being bypassed through spyware or code breakers.
Electronic provider safety: Please look at and consider the terms and conditions of Zoom and their privacy policy. Think about how Zoom uses personal data, cookies and location data.
Before our first session I will email you a form to ask some background information and to get a better idea about your hopes for the work. We will then book in a session for a time and day that it suitable. You can cancel or rearrange the session up to 24 hours ahead of the appointment without incurring a fee.
