About me and my therapy practice
I work using an integrative approach, drawing on my psychology degree, my person-centred training, and other methodologies I have knowledge of, this includes the psychodynamic approach, attachment theories, and cognitive behavioural therapy, (CBT).
I have experience of with adults, children and young people, I have worked within charitable organizations, educational settings and the NHS, mental health organisations, Children and Adolescence Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and roles working with families.. I understand the issues people face are complex and affect people in different ways.
I have experience of working with and supporting people with a variety of difficulties and issues, these are listed within the 'What I can help you with' section below.
I am also experienced in working therapeutically with children, young people and adults who are autistic, have ADHD, or a dual diagnosis. I also have experience providing information for the neurodevelopment assessment process.
From my experience of working with autistic individuals I understand the difficulties of social communication and relating with others can be confusing. I also understand the impact of alexithymia- difficulties of understating emotions, sensory processing and sensory overload can be distressing, and the problems which can arise due to executive functioning difficulties.
In terms of working with individuals with ADHD, I understand people face difficulties with concentration, processing information, completing tasks, and executive functioning difficulties. I also understand individuals have difficulties in controlling emotions, managing impulse control and experience difficulties with social interactions.
Every autistic individual and individual who has ADHD is a unique individual, there are shared traits of each condition, however, I understand the traits are individual to you, therefore, your therapy will be tailored uniquely to you and your needs.
Please see my website for more information.
Practice description
I provide a non-judgmental, respectful, supportive and confidential environment. I believe the quality of the relationship is paramount to the therapeutic work and to the person I am working with, a positive relationship ensures for a person to feel heard and respected, which allows those who I work with to find a better understanding of themselves, at their pace.
I understand everyone is a unique individual, therefore sessions are tailored to meet a person's needs.
I offer free introductory telephone call, (there is no obligation to work with me) if you email me, I will always reply to an enquiry, please check your junk email.
During the telephone call my aim will be to understand the issues that bring you to counselling and to explain how I work. During this you can decide if I am the right counsellor for you. If you feel happy to proceed, we will book in your assessment session.
If from the information you have given me if it is felt a different approach is needed or an alternative service would better suit your needs. I will discuss this with you and assist you in finding alternative therapist or services.
Please note that I will not be able to work with you if you are receiving ongoing therapy from another counsellor/therapist or agency.
My first session
What to expect in your first session:
During the first session, this will be an initial assessment, I will be gathering further information about you and we can discuss the goals of therapy, what issues you feel you want to work on/resolve and how you want to move forwards. The first session is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions.
During the sessions I will work at the pace of that is right for you and I will work on the issues that you wish to bring into the sessions, and you wish to discuss.
The sessions will occur same time on the same day of the week and the sessions last for one hour.
When I work with children and young people, I work in ways which are engaging to them, this can be through play, arts and crafts, sensory play, the use of worksheets and talking therapy. Within the assessment session, a child's or young person's preferred activity and any special interests will be discussed to ensure each child and young person feels their sessions are tailored for them and to help them to feel comfortable in engaging within the sessions.
If a child/young person or adult is anxious prior to attending sessions, I can explore ways which can help on reducing anxieties around engagement and with an aim to break down any barriers or difficulties with engagement with therapy.
