About me and my therapy practice

I am an experienced psychotherapist / counselling psychologist registered with the BACP, UKCP and HCPC.

I have been counselling clients for 15 years, offering individual psychotherapy and counselling online and in person.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to psychotherapy.  My aim is to be alongside you as you gain new, more helpful perspectives on your problems and resolve your difficulties.  I am committed to a culturally-sensitive and ethical way of working.

Practice description

I work with individual clients aged 18+, and strongly believe personal change is possible throughout life. You might not come with a specific, well-defined issue, but the kinds of problems I address with clients include:

Anxiety

Generalised anxiety disorder

Bereavement and loss

Relationship difficulties / anxiety

Attachment issues / early separation (inc boarding school)

Depression

Trauma - PTSD

Trauma - Complex PTSD

Childhood abuse

Work difficulties

Life transitions, eg retirement

Family estrangement

I would normally see you at the same time each week for a 50-minute session.

I draw on several different ideas and theories in my work. I place importance on early experiences and attachment relationships, body awareness and emotional regulation, and the individual's current social and relational context.

My first session

After an initial phone call, we can arrange to meet for a first session.   This is a chance for us to get to know each other.  I will ask you about your current circumstances and history, and anything in particular you would like to focus on.  We can also decide how many sessions you might need.

It can take time to relax in therapy.  Some people find it easy to share their problems right away, others take a little longer.  This is quite normal, and hopefully you will quickly feel at ease.

My first session

Please contact me to arrange an initial phone call.  This should help you decide if you would like to book a session.  You can ask any questions.  We can also think about a good time to meet.

Our first session will be a chance to get to know one another better.  You can explain more about why you are starting therapy, and let me know if you have any specific goals.  You may do a lot of talking, or you may need me to do most of the talking while you get to know me!

Over the first and second sessions, I will ask you about your early family life, school, later education, employment and relationships.  Any assessment will be paced carefully so you don't feel rushed.  During this time, I may introduce some techniques you can practice at home.  We can identify some goals and make a plan for the coming weeks.

Therapy is a very personal affair.  It can be open-ended, but many people will need to limit sessions for financial or time reasons.  We can discuss this when we meet.
