About me and my therapy practice

I am a highly experienced and fully qualified psychodynamic counsellor, who has provided counselling services to adults and young people, within NHS mental health services and private practice, for over fifteen years.  I hold a Masters in Psychoanalytic Observation and Reflective Practice, as well as a Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling.  I am a tutor on the Masters in Human Relations and Counselling, run by Human Development Scotland  and accredited by Robert Gordon University.  I am also a fully qualified Occupational Therapist, working part-time within NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. For further information about my skills, experience, location, terms and contact details, please look at my website.

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and a registered member of the Health Professions Council (HPC).

My therapy practice is based in the Southside of Glasgow. I aim to provide a calm, compassionate and confidential space, where you will feel safe to share and explore your story with someone new and unfamiliar.

Practice description

My extensive training and experience means that I have a solid understanding of how a range of factors (such as trauma, loss, relationship difficulties, change, abuse, mental health difficulties and persistent low-level stress) can affect us, at different stages in our lives. I also have a strong appreciation of how our early life experiences and relationships can influence us long in to adulthood, regardless of whether we are aware of this or not.  Should you decide to work with me, I will use my knowledge, skills and experience to assist you to think about how some of these issues may be affecting you and some of your current relationships.  I will also support you to attend more closely to your inner thoughts and feelings, help you make connections across and between different parts of your life, enable you to recognise potential patterns in your ways of relating to others and encourage you to ‘feel’ your feelings more fully.  In short, I will work with you in an insight driven way.

In my experience exploring ourselves in this way, can help us gain a better understanding of who we are, both in relationship to ourselves and others.  It can also give us a greater sense of control over the world around us and help us feel more content in ourselves.  Indeed, many clients experience counselling as an unburdening of kinds and are helped to find new ways of being, that are more in keeping with who they truly are. Whilst such ways of working can sometimes be difficult and uncomfortable, I have watched many of my clients move on to feel happier in themselves, lead more fulfilling lives and have more satisfactory relationships.

My first session

I understand that making the initial steps towards counselling takes great courage and I see the opportunity to accompany others as they engage in this process as a real privilege. Counselling can be an uncertain and anxiety provoking experience and may be accompanied by a fear of exposure. With this in mind, I see the first session as an opportunity for you to decide if pursuing counselling, is the right decision for you.

All my sessions are 50 minutes, including the first one. When we meet for the first time, I will ask you to tell me a little bit about what has brought you to counselling and I will try to follow your story as best I can.  I will not ask you a lot of questions. Towards the end of the session, I will draw things to a close and ask you to spend some time thinking about whether or not you would like to continue with our sessions.  Should you decide to continue, we will decide together what shape, form and purpose the sessions might take.

It is my firm belief that the quality of our relationship will dictate the success of your counselling. There’s lots of research that confirms this too!  This means, I am keen that we both feel we are ‘a good fit’ for each other. If you feel that I am not the right therapist for you when we meet, then it’s OK to say so.

I am always happy to have an initial, no obligation discussion over the telephone to answer any queries you may have and to let you get ‘a feel’ for who I am, before booking your first session.
