About me and my therapy practice

Research shows that it is the quality of the relationship between you and your counsellor that is the key to a successful therapeutic outcome. Words like warm, safe, caring, honest, clear and boundaried can all be used to describe the type of relationship you are looking for to achieve those successful outcomes. Choosing the right counsellor for you is the best thing you can do for yourself. You may need to contact and talk with several counsellors before you find the one for you.

I work to create a relationship between us where you feel comfortable to share the things you need to.
I keep my interventions to a minimum so that your session is filled by you.
I help you to keep on track, if you have a definite goal.
I help you to approach and explore topics and feelings which are difficult for you to think about.
I check with you that this is ok.
I view you with compassion.
I don’t hold judgments about you, your behaviour, your situation or your experiences.
I try to see the world and your experience from your perspective.
I will share with you what I believe I know creating a shared process of listening, reflecting, checking and clarification.
We will build a unique counselling relationship tailored to you.

Person centred counselling helps to peel away outside influences. It can help you to find out what makes you tick, what makes life worth living for you. What is important to you and what you want to do. It can help to relieve anxiety, depression and feelings of panic. It can lessen a desire to be in control and help you to embrace the changes that are inevitable in life. Relationship issues can be explored and new ways of behaviour can be developed. It is an incredibly fulfilling type of counselling to deliver and I believe my clients find it a fulfilling experience too.

I believe counselling is a way of beginning a process of self reflection which you can use to benefit you throughout your life.

About me and my therapy practice

Research shows that it is the quality of the counselling relationship that heals and I am confident that we can build a strong therapeutic relationship. Many things can be brought to the counselling room and nothing is too silly or too big if it is causing distress to you. Counselling is a chance to unburden yourself of things you may never say to anyone else.

When you come for counselling sessions I give you my time, my training and my experience. The person centred approach, which I have chosen as my modality, is based in connection and acceptance. Here is some of what I offer:

I work to create a relationship between us where you feel comfortable to share the things you need to.

I keep my interventions to a minimum so that your session is filled by you.

I help you to keep on track, if you have a definite goal.

I help you to approach and explore topics and feelings which are difficult for you to think about.

I check with you that this is ok.

I have unconditional positive regard for you.

I have empathy for your experience

I try to see the world and your experience from your perspective.

As we work together:

I will get to know you and your situation

I will share with you what I believe I know creating a process of listening, reflecting, checking and clarification.

We will discover coping strategies which you are already using but you might not recognise.

We will find the best way to end our sessions so that you feel secure and ready to get on with the rest of your week.

Person centred counselling is an incredibly fulfilling type of counselling to deliver and I believe my clients find it a fulfilling experience too. I view counselling as a way of beginning a process of self reflection which you can continue throughout your life.

I work mainly Online using a range of ways to connect (see below). I also offer face to face appointments from my home office.

My first session

First sessions are a mixture of defining our business relationship, getting to know each other and a beginning of our work together. Most sessions begin with us meeting through our chosen method, online or face to face. We will probably spend a couple of minutes settling in and then I will introduce our contract. I will most likely have already shared a copy of this with you. This is your opportunity to ask any questions and for us to make any adjustments, perhaps you work shifts and we hash out an agreement to work flexibly.

When we have worked through the contract I will introduce my Data protection document which clarifies how I store your data eg your personal details and your rights regarding any data I hold about you.

I then obtain your understanding and consent.

These documents might take 10 minutes or so, it's a fluid process and it depends how much we have to discuss.

This time is also a chance to get to know each other a little. Time to take a breath and settle into the room or the Zoom and become a little more comfortable with each other.

Next I pass the session over to you. You can tell me what has brought you to counselling. You might be overflowing with stuff to say. This is also your opportunity to ask any questions about my practice, my experience, how I work. I don't discourage my clients from asking questions at any point in their counselling. I do reserve the right not to answer particularly if it is a personal question. I would explore with you what it is about the question or the information that is important to you. The main reason I don't share personal information is that the focus of your sessions should be you not me.

As we come toward the end of the session I will alert you that we have just a few minutes left and I will take the opportunity to ask how you have found this initial session. We will confirm our next appointment and end our session with goodbyes.

About me and my therapy practice

My supervision practice is firmly planted in my person centred roots. I think supervision is a gift. The benefits of this time for exploration of our work can not be over estimated. As all supervisors do, I offer a safe and reflective space in which to explore your work. I think a good relationship is core to good supervision and I hope we can build a strong working relationship with as much equality as is possible, given the inherent power imbalance in the supervisory setting. I know from my own supervision experiences that the things I least want to take to supervision are often the things I should take. If I need to work through something, I need to know I will not be judged or simply pacified. I want to work the issue through for my own best practice even if it appears trivial to my supervisor. With this is mind I like to create a feeling of space in your supervision, space for you and your thoughts so you can develop your practice not just offload your clients.

I also understand that supervision is a process which occurs over time. I need time to get to know you and at first you might want me to help you shape your supervision. In time I hope you will find freedom and autonomy in your supervision sessions and I encourage you to shape your supervision in the way that suits you. This very small amount of time a month can be a joy, a dynamic process and a chance to reset and restore.

My qualification allows me to work face to face or online I have chosen to work exclusively online using a range of ways to connect (see below).  I find all of these modes of delivery to be very effective and am happy to explore with you which method may suit you best.

I work to the BACP ethical code and I am keen to keep the client at the heart of our work. I hope you will find supervision with me to be engaging and supportive.
