About me and my therapy practice
I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist, specialising in working with young adults (under 35).
Originally, I specialised in Child & Adolescent psychotherapy. Since 2012 I have worked with schools in Peckham, Brixton, Bermondsey and Hackney; providing therapy to students aged 5 – 18.
My approach is primarily psychodynamic. This means allowing the client to bring whatever content they wish to share, whilst I try to respond to the underlying anxieties and conflicts being expressed. I integrate psychodynamic, person-centred, attachment and mentalization theory to inform the work, enabling connections to be made with the client's past and present state of mind.
Therapy can provide a safe and confidential space, within which one can think and gradually come to understand their own inner world. Consistent weekly sessions create a sense of continuity; of being held; of having parameters within which to build trust, explore relationships and communicate.
Practice description
My practice is based in East Dulwich.
If you are seeking support, please include a few details about yourself - E.g. your age, current living/work situation and briefly explain your reason(s) for getting in touch.
If you are the parent(s) of a teenager and wish to make an inquiry on their behalf, please include their first name, age and a brief account of why you are seeking help. Please note - In my private practice, I only see clients aged 15 and above, with no exceptions.
To get in touch, either use the BACP contact form or email me directly: ruth@ruthwismayer.com.
I will do my best to get back to you within 24 hours.
My first session
Before embarking on therapeutic work with an individual, I will offer an assessment session. This is a confidential meeting, lasting 1 hour, in which I will ask some questions about past and current circumstances.
This initial meeting is also an opportunity for the individual seeking therapy to share whatever feelings or information they would like heard.
From there we will discuss a possible way forward together.
