About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I'm Catherine Nixon, a BACP-registered psychotherapist and counsellor based in the north east of England. As a therapist my aim is to help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and others, and to help you identify and work towards things that you want to change. I offer a safe and confidential space in which together we can explore the issues you are struggling with. Using an integrative approach, I draw on a variety of therapeutic models and techniques that are appropriate and relevant to each client. I work with my clients collaboratively and sensitively on issues that have been triggered by recent events or issues that are long-standing.
For the last ten years I have worked with clients in primary care, bereavement support services and private practice, providing short-term and open-ended counselling and psychotherapy to adults. Prior to my current therapeutic work I was a research scientist for 15+ years and spent several years completing my PhD on discursive constructions of self and sexualities in educational contexts. More recently I continue to develop my personal and professional interest in anxiety, working with clients to facilitate understanding of their experiences and empower clients to take an active role in anxiety management.
I trained and qualified as a psychotherapist and psychotherapeutic counsellor at The Northern Guild in Newcastle, UK. I'm a registered member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP), and as a practitioner within the field of psychotherapy and counselling, I work within the BACP code of ethics and good practice.
If you would like to arrange an initial appointment or if you have any questions please get in touch.
Practice description
As an integrative therapist I draw on a variety of psychological theories including those of attachment, early relationships, and self and identity development. In addition to my core framework of Transactional Analysis, my approach and interventions are informed by cognitive and behavioural theories, relational, emotion-focused and psychodynamic therapies.
The nature of the difficulties that you are experiencing, will determine to some extent the length and depth of therapy that is required. Issues that have been experienced for many years which have their roots in childhood experiences often require long-term psychotherapeutic work. Some difficulties, triggered by recent life events can often be resolved through short-term therapy.
My first session
Introductory session: I offer a free 15-minute Introductory session by phone or online, if you want to ask questions and meet me before you decide on your next steps.
Assessment session: If you decide to book an assessment session - this is an opportunity for us to explore the main difficulties you are experiencing, to identify your therapy needs and how we will work together going forward. The session also provides you with an opportunity to meet me and decide whether you would like to work with me. As the therapeutic relationship is a key part of the therapeutic process, it's important that you find a therapist that is right for you.
The initial assessment session and all ongoing sessions are for 50-minutes at a cost of £65/session.
