About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I’m Jo and I’m really pleased you’ve found me.

People decide to try counselling for all sorts of reasons. And I do understand that, at first, the idea of sharing your story with a stranger might feel a bit odd, or even daunting. But I believe that finding the right therapist - one who is a great fit, like your favourite shoes - can be life-changing.

I offer you a safe, non-judgemental space where you can simply be yourself. In return, you’ll be seen, and heard. We’ll build a relationship based on trust, respect and empathy; in my personal experience, those conditions are essential for change.

I don’t have a magic wand to wave and ‘fix’ you. The process might not be quick, or easy but you’ll have as much time as you need. Do I think it’s worth a try? Absolutely! Please get in touch - our initial consultation costs you nothing and there’s no obligation for you to continue if I’m not what you’re looking for.

Practice description

I’m in private practice in Nottingham where I completed my training at the Sherwood Institute. I’ve spent a number of years in the voluntary sector, working with a wide variety of clients and also spent two years in a University setting using brief focal therapy.

My degree is in Humanistic and Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, which I realise might sound a bit intimidating. Put simply, the humanistic element focuses on you as an individual. You have the ability to change and grow; to make choices and be responsible for yourself. I believe it’s important to recognise your uniqueness, with all the aspects - good and bad - that make you, you.

The integrative aspect means that I draw on different therapy models to help me tailor our work specifically to you.

I also work relationally because I believe that the quality of the relationship that we build is fundamental in helping bring about change and growth. My role is not to tell you what to do, but to be your ‘interactive mirror’ - reflecting what I see and hear back to you, helping you identify beliefs or behaviours that you might not have seen previously.

My first session

I offer an initial 20-minute consultation free of charge, usually on the phone or via Zoom.

I understand that talking to someone for the first time (even if you have previous experience of therapy) can be daunting and it’s really important that you feel comfortable. Our initial contact is very informal - you share a bit about yourself to help me understand your background and what’s led you to decide that therapy might be helpful for you. You can also ask any questions you might have. After this, if you ready to go ahead, we’ll arrange a regular appointment.

During our first full session, we’ll go over some admin and I’ll explain in more detail how I work, and what you can expect from me during our work together.
