About me and my therapy practice

Welcome to my page, my name is Sam. I have over 9 years experience working with a diverse range of clients in a variety of settings. I have a specialism in working with trauma and abuse alongside extensive experience working with a wide range of issues.

I appreciate how challenging reaching out for support can be and I aim to make this process as comfortable as possible. A key element of what i value in practise is creating a positive therapeutic relationship which is considered a strong predictor of good therapy outcomes. I view both myself and my clients as mutual participants in the therapy process where clients can feel empowered and build trust with me.

I aim to create a supportive welcoming atmosphere that is free of judgement and sensitive to anything we may discuss. Establishing how we can collaborate in order to allow you to grow, move forwards or process particular events or experinces is key within my work.

I always encourage and support client feedback at any stage in the therapy process as I feel this can assist in eliminating or attending to anything that may get in the way of our alliance.

If it is of interest I am able to work creatively which I feel can be transformative and may provide a new or different way of addressing what you bring to therapy.

I have experince working in both long and short term settings and have experince working in educational, probation, mental health and organisational contexts.

Alongside my private practice I work as a Senior therapist within the charity sector supporting women who have experinced trauma and abuse. I also work for a Sheffield Rape Crisis service who supports individuals impacted by rape, sexual assault and abuse.  I have been in these roles for 6 years.

Practice description

My therapy approach is an assimilative integrative model located within a humanistic framework. I work from a person centred base whilst assimilating Gestalt principles into my practise. I hold an awareness of other theoretical orientations as my core training included looking at: psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, existential and solution focused ways of working.

My core training is a Masters Degree in Counselling which I gained in 2018 from York St John University. The first 2 years of my MA was a BACP accredited post graduate diploma with a humanistic basis.

In my final year of my MA I completed a research project where I focused on therapists experiences of Counselling adult clients with learning disabilities.

Prior to this I completed a Bachelor of Arts joint honours degree in counselling and psychology at York St John University in 2009. My degree focused on person centred, cognitive behavioural and psychodynamic approaches.

I began working remotely online and over the phone during the COVID-19 lockdown and completed an 80 hour training course which met BACP competancies for online and telephone counselling.

My first session

I am currently offering private sessions over Zoom and telephone.

Prior to a first session I offer a free 10 minute phone call at a convenient time for you to discuss your therapy needs. If we decide to work together we will agree a start date and time and I will send you  a copy of my counselling agreement.

We will take some time at the beginning of our first session together to ensure our working agremeent is understood and I will gather some basic details about you.

Within our first session we will begin to discuss what has brought you to therapy and what you may like to gain from the process. We will explore ways of working that will suit you and how we can address your experiences in a helpful way. Together we will agree on what the best way for you to share your experinces will be and begin doing this. You may also have questions for me at this stage prior to starting therapy.

At the end of the session there will be space to explore how you found the session and we will discuss what our next steps will be. We will agree when our next session will be and begin to think about the number of sessions we may spend working together.

There is no pressure to continue to working with me if you decide i am not the therapist for you.

About me and my therapy practice

I am in the process of completing a Level 7 Diploma in Clinical Supervision at the Scarborough Counselling and Psychotherapy Training Institute (SCPTI). Predicted completion: 2025.

My evolving supervision style is influenced by the seven eyed supervision process model. I also integrate elements of the cyclical model of supervision into my practice.

My core training is a Masters Degree in Counselling which I gained in 2018 from York St John University. The first 2 years of my MA was a BACP accredited post graduate diploma with a humanistic basis. My therapy approach is an assimilative integrative model located within a humanistic framework. I work from a person centred base whilst assimilating Gestalt principles into my practise. Prior to this I completed a Bachelor of Arts joint honours degree in counselling and psychology at York St John University in 2009. My degree focused on person centred, cognitive behavioural and psychodynamic approaches.

I currently occupy a role as a senior therapist at Saffron Sheffield offering specialist trauma and abuse therapy to women. I also work as a bank counsellor at Sheffield Rape Crisis and have my own private practise. I have a specialism in trauma and abuse work and have an interest in working creatively.

As a psychotherapist I have experience working within: the charity sector, with EAP’s, the probation service, with organisations and in the private sector.

Before training as a psychotherapist I worked primarily supporting adults with learning disabilities in a variety of settings. I have travelled extensively and lived and worked in various countries.

Practice description

As my evolving supervision approach is informed by the seven eyed process model of supervision, a focus of my approach is on the supervisees and clients relationship, our relationship in supervision and the supervisees relationship to wider contexts and stakeholders. My supervision approach draws on a wide range of relational and systemic processes. Discussions around theory, ethics, policy and procedures and therapy interventions is also an important element of my work.

I aim to work with supervisees in a non judgemental, safe and non-shaming way. I am passionate about supporting supervisees at all levels of experience to attend to the quality of their work with clients and enhance and support their practice.

Adopting the seven eyed process model of supervision enables me to work with a range of helping professionals in various contexts outside of the counselling and psychotherapy profession.

My first session

Prior to our first session we may have had a conversation about working together. I will have sent you a copy of my supervision contract which we are able to discuss together within our first meeting.

The first session offers us an opportunity to get to know one another and discuss how we will work together moving forwards. In our first meeting we will likely discuss your supervision requirements, current practice and how supervision can best support you.
