About me and my therapy practice

A little about me.

I have always worked with people and prior to becoming a counsellor, I worked as a HR professional for a large manufacturing company. I recognised my profession was not giving me the purpose, meaning or work life balance I wanted so I decided to start a new chapter in working with people, but in a different way.

My new career direction started 10 years ago; a sudden loss of a loved one affected me. To help me through this tough time, I had some bereavement counselling. I noticed from having the safe space to talk about my feelings and issues at the time, I questioned my life direction. My loss put my life into perspective. I recognised I had outgrown my HR role and wanted my profession to be meaningful and reflect me as a person, so I decided to become a counsellor. I left behind the world of business and started my counselling career. I progressed from an introductory basic evening course to completing a Bachelor of Arts in counselling.

Once qualified, I started and managed a counselling service for a local charity for people impacted by cancer. I continue to oversee this service and have over seven years’ experience of counselling clients whose lives have been devastated by cancer.

In addition, I have worked with clients from all backgrounds with a diverse range of problems. I have experience of counselling clients covering Anxiety, Bereavement, Depression, Loss, Trauma, Cancer, Self-esteem, Relationships, Redundancy, Stress and Work-related issues. Whilst the scope of my counselling work has been working with the impacts of a loss of some kind, I am able to work with most life issues people struggle with.

I am a qualified counsellor and a registered member of the BACP and abide by their code of ethics. I also hold an enhanced DBS and I am registered on the Government DBS update service. I have Professional Indemnity and Cyber Security insurance and I'm on the register with the Information Commissioners Office (ICO).

Practice description

My approach.

As a counsellor, my role is to provide a safe, confidential space to allow you to explore your thoughts and feelings. Through exploration and examining your life you will become more self-aware which can help you make new, meaningful choices within it.

I offer a chance to reflect on the difficulties or problems you are experiencing in a safe environment, this can be helpful with someone from outside your day-to-day life. Together we can explore your situation in a way that leads to fresh perspectives - and a new understanding of yourself.

Counselling is not about giving you solutions or advice but empowering you to make your own changes and own choices that are right for you. I am not the expert in your life, you are!

My approach to therapy is a Person-Centred one. My role is to create the right conditions and to go with you on your journey, as a fellow traveller and sometimes guide - towards what the founder of person-centred counselling, Carl Rogers, called ‘self-actualisation.’ Person-centred work is focused on empathy, a non-judgmental approach and providing emotional support; everyone has a built-in motivation to reach for their full potential, but sometimes need a bit of support to get there!

Counselling sessions.

My counselling sessions are 50 minutes in duration and usually take place on a weekly basis.

Fees vary depending on the delivery method. In-person appointments are £55.00 per session and telephone and online counselling appointments are £50.00 per session.

Before any appointments are arranged, I will liaise with you first to understand the reasons you are thinking of coming to counselling to ensure I am the right counsellor to help. If I am not the right counsellor for you, I will say and will point you in the right direction of where to find a suitable counsellor who may better suit your needs.

My first session

Once I have an understanding of your presenting needs, our first appointment will be arranged. You will be asked to complete a Client Agreement, this will be sent to you prior to your first appointment and will outline the terms of my practice, this includes everything you need to know about your sessions, cancelling appointments and what you can expect from me. Agreements will be sent electronically and can be completed electronically or a hard copy to be signed if preferred. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about the client agreement before your first appointment.

During our first session, I will complete an assessment. An assessment is the process of gathering information about you and how your are finding general everyday issues which will allow me to understand how you are experiencing different things, it helps as a starting point for therapy.

The duration of the therapeutic process will depend on the type of difficulty or problem you are facing. I usually offer six sessions initially; our work will be regularly reviewed giving us both the chance to assess how the relationship is working out. Further sessions can continue but will be discussed and mutually agreed first.

Regular appointments can be made in advance if you would prefer the same appointment each week, I have an online booking system which will be shared with you or I can arrange an appointment for you. I'm also able to accept payments online through my booking page (found on my website). I can also accept card payments if seeing you in person. (Any private data is stored inline with GDPR requirements).

Other payments methods include cash and bank transfer.
