About me and my therapy practice
I am an integrative counselling psychotherapist and clinical supervisor who believes that the inner conflict, within a person, is due to their confrontation with the givens of their existence and their relationship with life. Integrative therapists hold the view that there is no single approach that can treat individual clients in ALL situations. My grounded therapy style is relational with a strong interest in existential principles. As such, I believe that we are motivated, as human beings, to live purposefully and meaningfully, and that we find meaning in life as a result of responding humanely to life's challenges. Additionally, I believe that:
- Life has meaning under all circumstances, even the most challenging and miserable ones.
- Our main motivation for living is our will to find meaning in our life.
- We have freedom to find meaning in what we do, and what we experience, or at least in the stance we take.
- Sometimes we need guided support to address these concepts and understand our distress and the threat to our meaning-in-life.
My approach focuses on attachment and the family system that we all exist within and informs our adult-adult relationships. It lends itself well to working creatively with all aspects of human experience - whatever the therapeutic needs or problem(s) being faced by the person and regardless of their age or stage of life.
My 'relational' style places great emphasis on the relationship between client and therapist and is invested in the need for therapeutic intimacy and 'engaging real' between the two people (therapist as well as client). My belief is that this will ultimately produce the most effective and enduring outcome for the client.
Practice description
I established my counselling and psychotherapy practice, in 2017. I offer longer-term psychotherapy, shorter-ter counselling, personal therapy for counselling and psychotherapy students, as well as newly qualified and established practitioners. I also offer clinical supervision for trainee and qualified practitioners using the Seven-Eyed Model of Supervision (Hawkins and Shohet, 1985).
My first session
Initial (assessment) sessions are guided up to 90 minutes. This is an opportunity for prospective clients to meet me and to get a sense of how I work and for me to understand your story - who and how you are in the world; how your life has been up until the point of our meeting, and what has happened or caused you to consider entering therapy. I sometimes recommend two assessment sessions before making an offer of therapy.
There will never be pressure from me for you to sign-up to a course of therapy or to pay in advance for a block of sessions. We will negotiate the number of sessions and mutually agreeable times for us to meet if and when an offer of therapy is accepted by you.
