About me and my therapy practice
I offer Mindfulness and Compassion Informed Therapy which combines my longstanding therapy experience (since first qualifying in 1998) with deep immersion in Mindfulness and Self-Compassion teaching since 2010.
With an original training in Carl Rogers’ Client-Centred Therapy I undertook a special study during my MSc degree in Teaching Mindfulness-Based Approaches (Bangor University 2016) which explored the fit between mindfulness and client-centred therapy in both theory and practice.
I have offered therapy in private practice and previously within the NHS for many years and was Manager of a Primary Care therapy service for 8 years. I have offered Mindfulness and Self-Compassion training since 2014 both in the UK and internationally. I am a Certified teacher and Teacher Trainer of the Mindful Self-Compassion programme.
My work is highly relational in that I work to establish a safe and confidential connection with you in which you feel increasingly free to explore your experiences with me as an engaged, reflective and supportive companion. It’s not unusual to discover you may have been living with familiar ‘messages’ and patterns of relating to both others and to yourself. This can prove helpful in understanding why you have become the person you are, and it can open up the possibility to choose changes you feel may benefit your way of interacting with your current world moving forwards. Through our process together new insights can arise and new developments emerge which enable you to live more resourcefully and with greater awareness and compassion for yourself and for others.
It may be there’s a specific event or experience that is troubling you either currently or some time in the past. Or perhaps you simply feel moved to give yourself the opportunity to explore more satisfying ways of moving forwards in your life.
Practice description
Therapy is an opportunity to establish a confidential relationship with an experienced and qualified therapist who will help you to explore the problems or issues that are causing you concern. It is often easier to talk to a therapist than to family or friends about what is troubling you. People ‘in your life’ may understandably have a view of things from their perspective whereas as your therapist I am alongside you with no other agenda.
Our boundaried relationship can enable you to offload when things are troubling you, and it can help you to understand yourself at a deeper level and consider options to identify any changes you might like to make.
All sessions are online (via Zoom) and I will send you a link to join our call. The session is your time to use for talking about whatever you wish. Sometimes that will be something that is occurring in your life in the present and sometimes an earlier experience.
Sessions are for an hour and are usually weekly at the same time. We will agree together how many sessions to arrange as our work together unfolds – sometimes it may be short term (6-10 sessions) and sometimes longer term. It is helpful to have a planned and agreed ending process as our work together concludes.
My first session
I offer a free no obligation phone or Zoom call (of up to 20 minutes) to explore the possibility of you having therapy with me. This call is a good opportunity for us to get a sense of one another, for you to begin to share your world with me and for me to understand something of what has brought you to therapy.
Assuming we go on to arrange to work together I will ask you to sign a therapy agreement following our first session. This agreement sets out the practicalities of our work such as agreed timings, cost and confidentiality.
