About me and my therapy practice

***Awarded Best Counselling Service, Newbury, 2024 by Quality Business Awards***

I’m a BACP accredited counsellor and for the past 10 years I have provided support to individuals experiencing worries related to, anxiety & stress, low mood/depression, work related issues, family problems, anger management, grief/loss, at a life junction, bullying, friendships / relationships, neurodiversity, school troubles, self-identity, self-esteem, living with long term physical or mental health problems, drugs / alcohol, self-harm, trauma, abuse, relationship with food/ eating, phobias, and OCD.

Sometimes we find ourselves caught up in over-thinking, over- criticising, replaying painful / uncomfortable memories, whilst feeling a range of emotions; from overwhelmed to feeling nothing at all. These experiences can prevent us from being caring towards ourselves and others. Counselling can help to slow it all down, giving time and space to focus on ‘the self’. Whether it be to observe our behaviours, our thought patterns, our feelings, or any kind of impact it has on ourselves or others. They could be related to experiences in or out of your control; or occurred in the past, the present or even concerning the future.

Practice description

My counselling experience has taught me by learning about ‘what makes you tick’ empowers ‘us’ to either work towards ‘acceptance’ or choosing how to ‘move on’ or taking steps to change’. Just being here on the BACP search site looking for a therapist, you have made a wise intention to move towards either loving kindness, or calmness of mind, for letting go, or compassion, whatever it maybe; forms part of the journey towards change.

Starting counselling sessions can feel uncomfortable at first, I liken it to the ‘catching a cold, as you accept the symptoms, you begin to feel worse, but as symptoms are released, you can start to feel better.’ I can help you explore and navigate yourself out of, metaphorically speaking ‘the maze’ of setbacks, and distresses in life, using a non-judgemental, collaborative therapeutic stance, as only you are the real expert of your life. Working together at your pace, we can start on a way forward with meaning, ‘out of that maze.’

My first session

Let me say firstly, in the first session it is normal to feel nervous. I am there to support you.

When you first contact me, I will offer a free 30-minute telephone or online conversation, to explore your counselling needs. This will also give you a chance to ask me any questions, that I hope will help you make an informed decision, on whether my tailored, integrative approach to therapy, is for you. Likewise, If I am unable to help, then I will try and point you in the direction of another therapist who may be more suitable.

If we mutually agree to work together, I will send you a copy of the counselling agreement, which describes what counselling is, the process of counselling, including confidentiality, privacy and information security statements that summarises how your data will be managed.

The first therapy session, will involve going through the counselling agreement, and completing a short assessment that will cover what brings you to counselling.
