About me and my therapy practice

Sometimes life can be hard. I recognise that we are all unique and your reasons for seeking therapy will be as individual as you are.

Finding a counsellor that you can connect well with can make a real difference to how you feel and how you manage what is difficult for you.

I am a qualified, trauma-informed Integrative Counsellor and Mindfulness Teacher. I draw on many different counselling approaches which allows me to work in a holistic and unique way with each individual.

I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and I abide by their Code of Ethics and practices. I undertake Continuous Professional Development and regular clinical supervision.

In addition to my private counselling practice, I work in the following roles:

• Counselling Lead for a cancer charity

• Tutoring in Higher Education courses on mental health and counselling

• In a crisis mental health service within the NHS

• Volunteer counsellor for a not for profit counselling service

 What to expect from counselling

Thinking about seeing a counsellor at any time in life can often feel daunting. The initial reaching out is the hardest step to take. It's normal to feel nervous to begin with. Coming to therapy allows you to talk over your problems in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space, helping you to make sense of things and work towards the changes you would like to make in your life.

My offer to you

• A warm, safe, confidential space where you can explore your difficulties openly.

• A professional and genuine relationship with me to facilitate reflection, self-awareness and growth.

• Flexibility to help you find ways to improve your well-being, confidence and sense of calm.

I will work alongside you at your own pace, supporting you to draw on your strengths and resources, helping you to feel more connected to your life in a meaningful way.

Practice description

My therapeutic work utilises a trauma-informed and strengths-based approach. A trauma informed approach is a holistic view of each individual, taking into consideration each person’s unique way of being in the world, including personal beliefs and identity, health and wellbeing, childhood experiences, family upbringing, interpersonal relationships, social networks, cultural factors.

A strengths-based approach focuses on positive emotions, strengths, resilience, and overall functional well-being.

Below I have outlined some of my counselling approaches. Do get in touch if you would like more information.

• Mindfulness skills teach us to become aware of and then step back from distressing thoughts and feelings, allowing space to be fully present with each moment.

• Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a NICE recommended therapy for relapse in depression. However, it can be helpful for a wide range of issues.

• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) teaches us to recognise and break the vicious cycle of unhelpful thoughts and habits that maintain low mood and anxiety.

• Compassionate focused therapy helps us to draw on our innate capacity for self-compassion by developing a relationship with our Compassionate Self.

• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can help you to identify your values and commit to living your best life.

• Interpersonal Therapy is a NICE recommended therapy for relationship difficulties. Please note: this is not couples therapy.

• Behavioural Activation (BA) helps to bring motivation and pleasurable feelings back on line as a result of depression.

• Grounding exercises can help with anxiety, post-traumatic stress and complex grief. Interventions include: mindfulness of breath and body, progressive muscle relaxation and soothing place imagery.

• Internal Family Systems (IFS) sees each person as possessing an internal family of ‘parts’. As we can gain understanding of each part this can help us move towards wholeness in recovery.
