About me and my therapy practice
I am a warm, experienced counsellor working in Exeter. I have broad ranging experience working with both adults and adolescents and continue to value working with both equally. I came to counselling in 2005 having been a listening volunteer with Samaritans for 10 years and have many years' experience employed as a counsellor in a local secondary school. My approach is non-judgemental and aims to be empowering for you. The relationship that develops between us is a very important part of the process - being able to feel relaxed, safe and understood is central to our work. I offer a warm, accepting environment in which we can explore whatever you bring.
Practice description
I work integratively, which means that I have training, and see value, in a range of counselling approaches. This is helpful because it means I can be flexible and am able to tailor my work to that which will best meet your individual needs. I seek to create a relationship where your individuality is respected and very much valued.
It is extremely important to me to be as authentic as I can in the counselling space, offering a relationship in which you will hopefully feel deeply heard and accepted. I have an open, honest, non-judgemental approach, which allows expression and exploration. I will listen and aim to help you understand how past experiences, concerns about the future or issues surrounding self-confidence may affect your life now. Together we can reflect on how you respond to past or present events in your life and begin to explore the way that you relate to yourself and others. I am compassionate and dedicated in supporting you to make the changes you may wish to make - but at the same time to accept and value yourself. I believe in empowering you to find the potential for growth that is innately within you. You know yourself best and given the right environment, I believe it is possible for you to access those inner resources and begin to live life more fully.
My first session
I appreciate that finding the right counsellor can be difficult so offer a free initial appointment. This gives you the opportunity to hear something of how I work and to see how it feels. This initial meeting isn't a counselling session but an opportunity for you to let me know something of what has been going on for you and why you are considering counselling. There will be ample time for you to ask questions/talk through any queries you may have and then together we will decide if counselling is right for you. If you choose to continue we can consider meeting on a regular basis. I can offer short or longer term counselling depending on your needs.
