About me and my therapy practice
Dactari has been operating as a business for over a year now. All of our therapists are qualified counsellors with an MSc in Counselling and Psychotherapy, and are registered with BACP. They have all undertaken an additional 42 hours in domestic abuse counselling training and have worked in domestic abuse counselling for at least 2 years. This means we have one of the most experienced teams in the UK for counselling domestic abuse.
We work with people who have been abused either as a child or as an adult. Experiencing abuse, no matter how old you are, can bring many mental health difficulties, such as depression, anxiety, symptoms of post traumatic stress, low self-esteem or low self-confidence. We believe that it does not matter where we start in your story, we will find the things that matter most to you and explore them together as and when you are ready to do so. It is often only when we have worked through difficult experiences that we can leave them behind. By recognising that the experiences happened but do not define us as people, we can take steps into the life we choose for ourselves.
We work integratively, primarily from a person-centred perspective. This means we work with whatever you choose to bring to the session and use ideas, theories and techniques from CBT, psychodynamic and other therapeutic philosophies that we feel will be helpful.
Dactari is currently only working online through video-conference technology such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom.
Concessions
It is sometimes helpful for someone to meet their counsellor first, before committing to counselling, and we offer an initial 30-minute session free of charge if that would help you.
In addition, we offer a concessionary rate to anyone who is currently in receipt of any state benefits.
Exceptions to work
We do not work with children and young people under the age of 18, nor with couples or anyone experiencing current difficulties with addiction or psychosis.
Practice description
Domestic abuse can be a complex experience involving emotional, psychological, physical, sexual and/or economic abuse. These days we are also seeing more cases of cyber abuse. Whatever you bring, we can work with you to understand and process what happened and find a way forward for you. Our therapists are very experienced and understand how difficult it can be to share what you need to share.
One of the benefits of working with an experienced domestic abuse therapist is that they can help you to express your experiences as they know the sort of things that can happen. Talking with someone who does not have to be educated about domestic abuse and how difficult it is to find a way out of the relationship can be a relief and also facilitates a more efficient counselling process for you.
There are no minimum numbers of sessions, nor any maximum numbers. It is very much up to you how many sessions you feel you might need. If you have a very specific, small number of issues concerning you today, counselling at Dactari can be on a short-term basis. Having said that, we find that people who have longer term relationships with multiple abuses are likely to need more counselling sessions than someone who was in a short term relationship with one particular type of abuse. Most of our clients take 10-20 sessions, some have a fewer number of sessions, a few have more than 20 sessions.
We can work with you weekly or fortnightly to suit your needs or your budget. It is worth noting, however, that working fortnightly can extend the number of sessions required due to the time between sessions and the need to work a little more slowly.
We can talk about what you need and want from therapy during our free 30-minute introductory session. This session is used by you and the counsellor to see whether the therapy we offer is likely to be helpful for you.
Initial contact with Dactari is via the contact details on our website, www.dactari.co.uk, by telephone, email or contact form.
My first session
If you decide you would like to continue counselling with Dactari after the first 30 minute session, then the counsellor will agree a date and time for your first session with them.
Prior to the first session, the counsellor will send you a client information sheet which outlines a number of topics such as confidentiality and fees, which we can discuss as part of the first session. By starting work with Dactari, you agree to the terms and conditions within the client information sheet.
During the first session, the counsellor will ask for some additional contact details and will ask you about your interests and objectives for counselling as well as some details about what brought you into counselling at this time. We will also discuss any queries or things requiring further clarification. This usually takes around 15-20 minutes. Most people find this process quite helpful as they explore a range of issues which they may, or may not, have previously been aware. We would then begin the counselling process, led primarily by the material you chose to bring or something that has come up in the discussion.
At the end of the session, and any subsequent sessions, we will ask you whether you want to continue with therapy, and if you wish to do so, we will arrange a date and time the following week. Usually the day of the week and time of the counselling is consistent week to week as this allows you and the counsellor to arrange any diary appointments away from the counselling session. However, we know that life intervenes, and domestic abuse often brings with it solicitor and court appointments or medical appointments for ongoing health issues. As such, we recognise that sometimes the appointment may need to be moved to another time or day some weeks. This can be agreed with you counsellor at the time.
All links for online meetings will be sent by the counsellor a few days before the session is due. Payment for the session is due at least 24 hours before the session.

Features
Availability
I have private practice on Wednesdays and Fridays. My availability for counselling on other days is very limited. Please contact me to discuss currently available slots. Please note that face to face counselling sessions all take place between 10am and 6pm.
I can also offer online and telephone therapy for people living further away or who may not be able to reach Great Ayton easily.
About me and my therapy practice
My clients have described me as a warm and compassionate therapist who understands what is going on for clients quickly, and offers useful observations and challenges to allow exploration of the issue brought to the session. I also have a reasonably good sense of humour which can be helpful in counselling sometimes!
I have been in counselling practice for over 15 years and have worked with people who have had a range of experiences, including domestic abuse or violence, workplace bullying, childhood abuse in all its forms, bereavement and loss. Symptoms reported by clients range from depression and anxiety, through to complex trauma and dissociation.
I work as an integrative therapist with a person-centred base, drawing on elements of coaching, CBT and psychodynamic practice. This means that I work with what you bring and use different skills to help, depending on the topic. This may include working with visual imagery or using creative activities where this is appropriate for you.
I believe that it does not matter too much where we start from. As we explore topics, we will reach those areas that will be helpful for you in terms of resolving what has brought you to counselling. As such, all the counselling I undertake is client led.
There are no minimum or maximum numbers of sessions. Counselling can be short (up to 6 sessions), medium (6-20 sessions) or long term (more than 20 sessions).
In general, the more complex and longer term your issues have been, the longer therapy will take to provide a good outcome for you. Many clients find that up to 20 sessions is enough, a few have spent more than a year with me. This is something that we would cover in our free 30-minute introductory session, when we can explore what might be helpful for you.
Practice description
I have my own private practice room in Great Ayton for in-person, face to face work. It is easy to find (I give very good directions I understand!) and there is free parking available outside.
Great Ayton can be reached by bus and train, although up to date timetables would be required to ensure you know bus arrival and departure times. For those people who would struggle to travel to Great Ayton for counselling, I can also offer online or telephone sessions. These are a little different to face to face sessions, as we go a little slower due to the technological limitations, but can also be very helpful for clients.
Sessions are usually weekly and last 60 minutes. Fortnightly sessions may be possible, but are not always suitable for clients due to the length of time between sessions. If you would like fortnightly sessions, please let me know so that we can discuss this first, so that I can understand the rationale for this. I can then offer a view as to the impact of fortnightly work so that you can decide whether that will work for you or not.
I offer a free 30-minute introductory session for us to get to know each other and decide whether we would be a good fit in working together. During this time we can discuss timings and your expectations around numbers of sessions.
I have been in private practice since 2014 and have helped many people with a range of issues, including depression, anxiety, bereavement, work related stress, eating disorders, childhood experiences of abuse and complex relationships. I enjoy the counselling process, as I witness people start to regain control of their lives and move onto to a future they are comfortable with.
You can contact me via email (jroddy@answersconsulting.com) or via the contact form on my website (greataytoncounselling.co.uk). Please do tell me if you would prefer me to contact you by telephone or email - I am happy to do either. Please provide a telephone number if you want me to call you back!
My first session
The first session could be regarded as our free introductory session. During that 30 minute session, I will ask you a few questions about why you are interested in counselling and also provide you with the opportunity to ask me any questions too. We will then talk about what the counselling might look like and decided whether we feel the fit is right for us both.
If we agree that we would like to work together, I will then email you with my practice contract (much as other counselling contracts so there shouldn't be any surprises!). and a form for you to fill in with some personal details and give to me at our first counselling session. We will spend a few minutes at the start of the counselling session going over the paperwork and then start the counselling properly.
Counselling sessions are 60 minutes long and I tend to keep to time quite well. This ensures privacy between clients as I have time built into my schedule to allow one to leave before another arrives.

Availability
I am currently offering training during weekdays, Monday to Friday, 9am - 6pm, either face to face or online. Training can be half days or full days. Please contact me for my specific availability over the next few months.
About me and my therapy practice
I offer highly specialist, online training in working with people who have experienced domestic abuse or domestic violence.
Domestic abuse, whether witnessed or experienced as child or an adult, can lead to longer term mental health conditions such as high levels of anxiety, relationship and trust issues, depression, post-traumatic stress, suicidal ideation, low esteem and low self-confidence. Working with people who have experienced domestic abuse is complex work and requires care and attention, as well as knowledge of the topic and high levels of therapeutic skill. I have developed a range of training from half day introductory seminars to an intensive 4-day counselling training course which covers everything required to start working as a counsellor with people who have experienced domestic abuse.
The training I deliver is based on my published research on domestic abuse counselling, which includes the domestic abuse competency framework for counsellors, co-authored with Professor Lynne Gabriel in 2019. This framework was developed from client research, identifying what clients wanted from counselling and what counselling process works best for them. This has been tested in a clinical environment at the University of Salford and found to be very effective.
This model of domestic violence is applicable to all individuals who have experienced domestic abuse. I work from the basis that we process the experience of the individual, based on their own history and social context, rather than the social context of the perpetration. This is quite different to most other training, but it allows a much more flexible and inclusive approach for clients.
Training is available to book online through the Dactari website. However, I can also offer bespoke training that is suitable for particular organisational needs, either for one day or two day sessions. Please contact me to find out more about what I can offer and how that would fit with your organisation.
Practice description
The domestic abuse counselling training course is run 3 times per year and will cover the competencies required for working with experiences of domestic abuse. This includes understanding domestic abuse and its impact on the individual, the therapeutic process that the client needs to move forward after their experiences, specific therapeutic skills required to support your practice development, working with complex trauma and the well-being of the therapist. Domestic abuse work can take an emotional toll on a therapist and being aware of, and responding to, warning signs is essential to safe practice. Organisational best practice takes into account these risks and offers training and support to mitigate them.
Bespoke training can be offered to organisations to provide information about the psychological impact of domestic abuse, or the therapeutic skills required for engaging with domestic abuse clients. Additional specialist seminars on complex trauma and how to work with it, the legal processes that many clients have to go through and the ethics and safety of practitioner work are also available. Each organisation will have differences in what training has already been offered/delivered, hence the offer to create something that will 'plug the gaps' left be more generally available training.
We also offer some recorded training session which are available to download from our website. More training will added over the next year or so.
Please note that, to our knowledge, there are no other providers in the UK offering this level of training. Please do view our website to see what we offer. I would be delighted to work with you if there is something we could help with!
My first session
If you are an organisation with specific training needs, bespoke training sessions can be created for your team. This may include counsellors, psychotherapists, mental health nurses, social workers, psychologists or psychiatrists. Please contact me to discuss your requirements. I will be happy to provide a quotation for the work, once we have established your needs.
Full details of all of our online training, accessible from across the UK, is available on our website https://www.dactari.co.uk.

Availability
I offer both individual and group supervision. As this is online, I have some flexibility around the timing of sessions, Monday to Friday between 10am and 6.30pm. I do have some availability for supervision. Please contact me for currently available times and days.
I only work with qualified therapists.
About me and my therapy practice
My work at Dactari is in domestic violence/abuse counselling practice supervision, where I am a published author and researcher. If you are looking for supervision for general practice, please contact me via my private website, www.greataytoncounselling.co.uk.
I work as an integrative counsellor, primarily from a person-centred perspective, using the model of practice developed through my research. This means that in working with whatever you choose to bring to the session and, in helping to explore your perspective, I will often use theories of abuse and my own experience of working with abuse to highlight specific ideas relevant to your practice. I believe that it does not matter where we start with each client, we will find the things that matter most to you together and explore those when you are ready to do so.
I qualified as a counsellor in 2009 and completed training as a supervisor in 2013. I have worked as a supervisor of qualified practitioners (working with adult clients) since then.
I can work with you on a short-term basis to cover absence or illness of your current supervisor, or on a longer-term basis if you are looking for regular supervision. I am also happy to offer group supervision for organisations or peer organised groups. Please contact me for more information.
All supervision through Dactari is currently online using Microsoft Teams or Zoom. I do have some flexibility on the timing of supervision sessions.
Concessions
It is often helpful for someone to meet their potential supervisor first, before committing to supervision, to make sure that we have the right fit and that I can support you in a way that is helpful for you. I am happy to offer an initial 30-minute session free of charge to facilitate that discussion between us.
Exceptions to work
I am not currently taking on any student counsellors for supervision, nor do I supervise therapeutic work with children and young people or couples.
Practice description
As a supervisor, I am interested not only in your client work, but also in you as a practitioner and human being. Things that are highlighted for you in practice are often things that we can learn most from, to support both future practice and our own personal development in our day to day lives. Domestic abuse work can be personally and professionally challenging and it is important to have a supervisor who understands the difficulties that can arise when working with people who have previously been abused. Not only can this help with session management and techniques, but also on self-care and the potential for identifying secondary traumatic stress and/or compassion fatigue. As I have spent the last 15 years involved in domestic abuse counselling and supervision, I offer a wealth of experience and practical solutions to a range of problems and well as insight into many of the client presentations that can be seen.
Supervision can also look at career and employment as well as personal development and I see supervision as supporting your growth as a professional as well as personally.
Supervision can be 1.5 hours per month, or an hour per month where you also have another supervisor for different practice work. If you have particularly complex clients, I can offer 1 hour every 2 weeks if this suits your practice bettter.
I am happy to work with both individual practitioners and groups of practitioners who are working with clients who have experienced domestic violence or abuse.
My practice is informed and underpinned by the BACP Ethical Framework (2018).
My first session
Our first session together will include contracting and clarification of our responsibilities as supervisor and supervisee. We will also use it to get to know each other a little better to confirm that we will be a 'good fit' as well as exploring some of your current practice issues.
At the end of the session, we will review our work together and decide on future sessions and timings.

Availability
I can offer supervision between 10am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, depending on availability. I currently do have availability, but please contact me for current times and dates. Please note that I am currently only taking on qualified counsellors for supervision. Supervision can be provided face to face or online, depending on your location.
About me and my therapy practice
I have been working as a supervisor since 2013. I work integratively, drawing on a person-centred approach whilst integrating elements of CBT, coaching and psychodynamic theories and practice.
As I only work with qualified therapists, my approach is collegiate, that we work together as a team to support you in your practice. I want to help you to understand what you bring to supervision and why and to explore what may be going on for either/both you and the client. Sometimes we might explore what happened in a particular session, sometimes we will talk about other ways to approach a client issue or help you to explore your thoughts feelings regarding a particular client.
I find different perspectives for exploring issues, which each of us contribute to, can bring great insight, learning and growth. I also believe challenge and support to be essential elements of a good supervisory experience.
I also believe that group supervision can be a great support for counsellors, particularly those in private practice who have limited contact with colleagues. I am happy to offer group supervision if you are interested in this.
I am an active researcher within domestic abuse and have expertise in this area. I have also worked in general practice and bereavement services since qualification and bring a lot of experience around complex case work.
Feedback from my supervisees is that I am very organised, warm and supportive, as well as getting to the heart of the matter with people quite quickly. This can be quite challenging. There are supervisors who will be much less direct than I am. Depending on what you are looking for in a supervisor, I may be what you are looking for, or not! I do offer a 30 minute free session for us to meet and see whether we like each others approach!
Practice description
I have my own practice room in Great Ayton (North Yorkshire) for those who can attend in person. For those who live further away or who will find it difficult to get to Great Ayton, I also offer online or telephone supervision.
Supervision can be 1 hour or 1.5 hours per month or we can meet fortnightly for 1 hour each session if that suits your practice better.
I am only work with qualified counsellors for supervision.
I am aware that sometimes counsellors need short-term supervision as a result of their existing supervisors illness or extended leave of absence. I am happy to offer 1-3 sessions of supervision where this is possible.
Supervision is not just about case work, but about your development as a professional counsellor. This includes identifying possible CPD opportunities, looking forward at your career aspirations and what additional experience you might need to achieve your ambitions, exploring any personal difficulties you might have (in relation to your practice) as well as your development as a counsellor in practice.
I have previously run personal development groups, group supervisions and set up and managed a domestic abuse counselling clinic which grew to more than 20 counsellors, seeing over 60 clients per week. I offer this information to show the breadth of my experience and my ability to understand things from the perspective of a private practitioner, trainer and clinical lead. This can be particularly helpful for counsellors starting in a new environment.
Moving supervisors can be a trying time. As counsellors, we rely heavily on the support and understanding of our supervisor and many of us have close, long term relationships with them. Changing a supervisor is therefore not always easy, and not always something we have chosen to do. It can feel very strange in a new and different relationship, but with that also comes opportunities. I will help you to make the transition to the best of my ability.
My first session
I offer a free 30-minute introductory session where we can check whether we have the right fit for ongoing supervision work together.
If we decide to work together I will email a contract for you to look at and which we can discuss at the first session. This contains all the things you would normally expect to see so there should be no surprises. Contract discussion in the first session usually takes a maximum of 10 minutes and usually less. The remaining time will be spent discussing what you want to focus on in supervision and any supervision issues that you bring. At the end of the session we will agree a date and time for the next supervision.
Going forward, the emphasis for the content of the supervision session will lie with you so that you get what you need from supervision. If there is anything that I feel would be useful to spend time on in addition to this, I will bring this to your attention. In this way we co-create each supervision session.
