About me and my therapy practice
I am an experienced psychotherapist and EMDR therapist with special interests in complex trauma and dissociation. I have gained experience in working with a wide range of issues as a result of working in organisational settings, college environments and in my private practice. This means that my practice is a generic counselling practice, however, a large percentage of my work is working working with trauma based responses (such as: physical, sexual abuse, PTSD, C-PTSD, BPD/EUPD), and dissociative disorders including DID (Dissociative identity Disorder) and often integrate EMDR therapy and parts therapy into a wider psychotherapeutic approach.
As primarily a Humanistic, Integrative Psychotherapist, my aim as a clinician is to foster a working relationship and help guide you and deepen your journey of self-exploration and healing, to help you process any unresolved experiences so they do not repeat internally allowing you to move forward without being pulled back by the past. I draw from non-directive therapies which put you in the driver's seat as well as using clinical judgement and experience in offering directions for processing and, where appropriate, provide challenges and alternatives to current processing or decision making to help foster different self-learnings, self-management or different perspectives to provide you with different options.
I offer the standard 50 minute psychotherapy sessions. As well as 90 minute sessions and intensive 2-4hr intensive sessions for in depth trauma processing.
I am a registered practitioner with several health insurance companies: BUPA, WPA, AXA PPP, Healix, Allianz Healthcare Worldwide, Cigna and Vitality Health. I can also provide invoices for clients to claim back fees from other healthcare providers- please check with your individual healthcare provider as each provider works differently.
Practice description
As a Humanistic therapist, the working relationship between us I feel is necessary for deeper healing and progress above psychological theory or technique. However, at times a more directive approach is needed for symptom management when stabilisation is needed. Helping people to process emotions, thoughts, beliefs and personal meanings within the context of the therapeutic relationship is at the core of growth and development. It forms the base of all my work whether in general counselling or more specific trauma therapy or when working with clinical diagnoses such as PTSD, BPD/EUPD, and Dissociative disorders. I believe this is central to growth & change which needs to be in place for therapeutic/psychological approaches to work at the deeper level underneath. As I do specialise in Trauma, I offer a phase oriented approach to therapy and EMDR. This looks different person to person, however, follows this structure: Phase 1: Safety & stabilisation. Phase 2: Processing traumatic memories, or, coming to terms with a traumatic pasty. Phase 3: integration & moving forward; or internal co-operation when working with dissociation. Ultimately safety is always primary with trauma. A lack of safety is inherent in trauma & often feels impossible. Trauma is very broad, very subjective & can often be more about biological and psychological responses to overwhelm rather than specific situations themselves. Trauma can be split into two groups: traumas of commission (things that happened which shouldn't), or traumas of omission (things that didn't happen which should have). It can become more complex depending on the event/s, age of onset, whether it’s repeated or singular, relationship to abuser if there was one & is very multi-faceted which requires a lot of piecing together.
The more severe or lasting trauma may be, the more parts of personality are formed to adapt to the traumatic environment. Working with parts of self is often essential to healing.
My first session
For me, the first session is all about getting to know each other and why you have entered therapy and what I can do to help. It is a known fact that the success of therapy lies largely in the relationship between therapist and client. Therefore, it is important we both get a sense we can work with each other before making a commitment for regular sessions. After the first session, I reserve your slot for 3 days for you to reflect on the session and see if you feel it is right for you to continue.
What I can help with
Abuse, Addictions, Anger management, Anxiety, Bereavement, Depression, Eating disorders, Identity issues, Loss, Men's issues, OCD, Personal development, Phobias, Post-traumatic stress, Self esteem, Self-harm, Service veterans, Spirituality, Stress, Trauma, Work related issues
