About me and my therapy practice
We all need someone to talk to when life is difficult. Counselling and psychotherapy can help us understand more about who we are, to make better sense of past or current events, our feelings and how we respond to others. At times this may be painful, but it also supports an opportunity to have clear experiences of greater trust, choice and sense of all-rightness.
I seek to provide a heartfelt and accompanied exploration of whatever issues you bring. I will seek to create a trusting alliance with you and compassionately join and hold you in your exploration of yourself.
We will work with feelings, emotions, thoughts and the felt senses towards generating a greater sense of understanding and wholeness. We will develop practical tools which enable you to notice more clearly how you respond and react to life events. With this increased awareness and a greater appreciation of the many nuanced and sometimes contradictory layers of your past and present experiences you can build greater resilience and sense of confidence, health and belonging in everyday life.
I have an MA in Core Process Psychotherapy. It is a relational talking therapy which draws from western psychological and neuro-scientific theory combined with mindfulness and other Buddhist teachings. Core Process works with body, mind and feelings.
I have been working as a psychotherapist since 2012 with a wide range of clients and issues. Clients have come because they wanted more from life; felt inadequate or misunderstood; that they couldn’t cope, didn’t belong, were stuck, overwhelmed, anxious or depressed; were facing personal or work difficulties; or were suffering from shock, abuse, trauma, loss, or ill health.
My life experience includes my own therapy, meditation, group work, fatherhood, health issues and, prior to my training as a therapist, a fulfilling and successful 30-year professional career in London. The later in particular can be called upon to support clients with work issues
Practice description
Given the surroundings I offer eco-therapy sessions to meet your needs incorporating walking in nature, engaging with the elements, meditation and relaxation.
In addition to seeking to create a safe, empathetic and accepting environment I seek to incorporate the following elements into the sessions:
Resourcing. Resources provide the ground for us to face suffering and move through difficulty with greater ease. Resources can be emotional, physical, psychological, spiritual or energetic. They are very individual and are an important element of self-care.
When we are more resourced, we are more able to stay present and exercise awareness and choice.
Compassion and equanimity. In my experience, compassion supports listening and reduces judgement and pushing beyond our limits. It helps develop self-compassion, relational trust and supports connection with others.
Similarly holding equanimity supports us to be less attached to a fixed outcome or way of thinking. Both support curiosity and witnessing, which enhance our capacity to explore, acknowledge and move through our fears and anxieties.
Mindful awareness. I incorporate mindfulness to support self-inquiry and experiencing a sense of spaciousness even in the middle of desperate feelings. A central theme is exploring catching our habitual behaviours and programmes by listening, particularly through the body and felt senses.
From a place of awareness, we can slow down cycles of repeated responses. When the ‘movie’ is slowed down the volitional power of the self and its history begins to drop, and present experience stands a chance of being lived.
Integration. I regularly check in with clients and spend time together reflecting how the material and any insights can be brought into everyday life. I seek to support clients to internalise the therapeutic work and move towards a greater sense of wholeness and belonging.
