About me and my therapy practice
Holding over 20 years’ experience, I initially trained in person-centred therapy. However, my knowledge and experience continues to grow and now incorporates other approaches to therapy, as well as issues of culture and diversity; sexual identity and orientation; lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans issues (an LGBTQ+ affirmative approach); gender; race and ethnicity; neurodiversity and other potential areas of discrimination. Overall, I seek an anti-oppressive approach.
I now work in an integrative, trauma-informed way, tailored as far as possible to a client's needs. Experience has shown me that different people need different things at different times.
Some clients find it helpful to explore their past - their childhood experiences, relationships with parents or other family members, often shedding light on current problems or difficult relationships.
Others may focus on specific concerns, setting an agenda, seeking solutions and working towards goals. CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) can often be helpful in this.
Learning to relax and self soothe using breathing techniques or mindfulness, grounding and calming the body; working with the 'inner child' or other 'parts' can also be effective.
General self-care and lifestyle changes, including further understanding about the biology and physiology of stress, anxiety and panic and recognising the triggers of these states is also an important aspect for many clients. Nutrition and dietary insights have similarly been enlightening.
Also, acknowledging the challenges of making changes in one's life, it can be helpful to understand more about particular habits and behaviour; sometimes 'self sabotage' or procrastination and what might be getting in the way of change. Taking a closer look in a curious and non-judgmental manner can lead to adjusting at a pace that works.
Many people find benefit in simply achieving a regular, trustworthy and private space where they feel supported, encouraged and heard without criticism.
