I work from my room in Rodborough, Stroud on Thursdays and Fridays and also see clients online using Zoom on Mondays and Wedensdays.
Professional memberships:
I'm an accredited person-centred counsellor with BACP and an accredited EMDR practitioner with the EMDR Association UK.
I have many years' experience of working with traumatised clients and those challenged by their difference from the main stream. Using both counselling and EMDR offers me the flexibility to work with my clients' bodily sensations, emotions and thoughts. All of which may have been impacted by previous traumatic life experiences.
About me and my therapy practice
Counselling and EMDR can bring peace to your traumas and understanding to your inner pain. In therapy we can work towards achieving a healthy balance so that your life is calmer and more nourishing.
Difference:
Being different and feeling the pain of not fitting in is confusing and upsetting. Experiencing hostility, including from racists, homophobics and sexists, can cause anxiety, fear and create doubts about ourselves. Counselling can increase your self-acceptance and improve the confidence with which to face the world.
The wounds from relationships can last a lifetime. Counselling and EMDR are therapies based on healing relationships that can resolve these wounds no matter how long ago they occurred.
Trauma:
Traumas are old memories that still disturb you, leaving you distressed long after the events took place. They can spark painful emotions that are as strong as they were years, even decades ago. Traumas are so devastating that they wound your mind, emotions and body. Such symptoms can indicate you may have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) for which EMDR is an especially effective treatment.
In Counselling and EMDR I offer a therapeutic relationship in which you will feel sufficiently safe to explore your history, to reflect on old beliefs and to relax some of your old rules for living.
Counselling:
In counselling I don't offer advice but know that the answers you seek are inside you, ready to be revealed under the right therapeutic conditions.
EMDR:
In EMDR I direct you through the EMDR protocol which reduces the pain from old trauma, removing its power to upset you.
I also offer the Flash Technique, an adjunct therapy to EMDR, which can bring resolution to especially distressing old memories without the need to dwell on them.
I have a particular interest in working with clients in recovery from addiction and also those, who as children, experienced the distress of being sent away to boarding school.

My first session
Our work begins when our relationship, from our first meeting. I will invite you to tell me what brings you to counselling, what you may want and what I can do for you.
I will listen carefully to what you tell me, both to what you say, what you don't say and to its significance for you. I will check that I have understood everything and I will explain what I can offer, the way I work and my commitment to you.
I will also describe a couple of points from my contract, which I will already have emailed you so that you can review it before we meet. I will be pleased to discuss any comments yo may have on it.
At the end of the session there will be time for us to discuss if you have found it helpful. Is it what you want? And if it is, to arrange our next session.

About me and my therapy practice
Working with clients as a professional counsellor or psychotherapist is rewarding, challenging and, at times, stressful and upsetting. Supervision is a space for exploring all these responses and for managing our professional lives as well.
I am a person-centred counsellor, and supervisor as well as EMDR practitioner. I offer a safe, compassionate and empathic space in which we can explore all that you do with your clients, including your process, successes and also what went less well. The ethical framework and the development of your professional career form the foundation of this work.
Supervision is a safe place to explore the differences that can strengthen your work if accepted and understood. Whether it be colour, sexuality, gender based, disability or in other areas. They can make you feel unaccepted and wounded until you begin to value them and use the wisdom of your experience in the work.
My main purpose is to help you deepen and clarify your understanding of your clients. We all have blocks and areas of incongruence but working together in supervision, we will achieve a much better understanding of your clients and your process than you can do on your own. I want us to collaborate so that you feel fully supported.
I have been a supervisor for over 10 years and my supervisees have been seeing clients in treatment centres, agencies, private practice, employee assistance programs (EAPs), universities and teaching in FE colleges.
I use the 7 Eyed Model of Supervision which keeps the client at the centre of all that we do. You are the tool for effective therapy so everything that affects you is welcome in supervision with me. This includes events at the global level (including climate change and war), issues in your life and your unique process, as well as the nuts and bolts of managing your client contracts.
My session timings are flexible enough to meet the monthly supervision standards for all the professional bodies.

There is parking right outside and there are only two steps from the front path into my counselling room.
When working online I have the flexibility to offer you extra time if there are technical mishaps during our sessions. You will need privacy and a quiet room in which you feel safe enough to confidently process your work.
My first session
When we first meet I would like to hear about your training, practice, history and your expectations of what you want from supervision. I can explain how I work and what I can offer you, my approach to the BACP Ethical Framework, my responsibility to you and your clients. Finally we can talk about how our working relationship might look and if we feel it would be strong enough to offer you the support you need and want to grow and develop your counselling practice.
