About me and my therapy practice
Hello, my name is Cathy, and I am a BACP accredited counsellor in private practice, as well as a part time specialist mental health mentor supporting higher education students with both academic and general wellbeing issues.
As a counsellor I have over fifteen years' experience working in private practice and in the charitable and education sectors. I also have experience of working with addiction issues, having worked in the substance misuse sector for almost ten years.
I am trained in an integrative model of counselling which means I can draw on several approaches to offer counselling that meets your individual needs. It may be that you are troubled by unhelpful thinking patterns and cognitive behavioural therapy may help or you have a particular goal you want to work towards, and solution focussed therapy may be more appropriate. However, for many people this is not the case, and you may just have a sense that life does not feel right now, and you want support in making some changes. Whatever you bring to the sessions we will work collaboratively so that you feel more able to cope with life's challenges.
I will not give advice but will help you develop an increased self-awareness of your strengths whilst exploring and reflecting on your vulnerabilities to find a more contented way forward. We will go at your pace and my aim is to build an honest and trusting relationship with you as this is a fundamental part of the healing process of counselling.
Practice description
Life can be extremely challenging at times, and I know from experience that having someone who is accepting, empathic and non-judgmental to listen to you is an invaluable source of support. I aim to provide a safe space working from peaceful and confidential therapy rooms opposite Endcliffe Park, where together, we can explore and reflect on what is going on for you.
My first session
The first session is an opportunity for you to tell me a little bit about what has brought you to counselling, gather some background information and establish whether we feel we will work well together. I offer a reduced fee for the first session, so please ask about this when you enquire.
Prior to the first session I will email you a simple counselling contract to read through (usually available on my website, however, this is under reconstruction). The contract discusses the practicalities of counselling, including cost, cancellations, length of sessions etc. We can discuss this further at the first session, when you will also have the opportunity to ask any questions about me and my approach.
As it is important that we are a good fit for each other for successful therapy, you may wish to take some time to think about booking further sessions. I am more than happy for you to do this and contact me when you feel ready to schedule in some sessions.
