About me and my therapy practice

I am Salma Mousavi, and I provide a confidential, non-judgmental space where you can feel safe, respected, and understood.

As a counsellor, I will support you in exploring what’s troubling you, helping to uncover root causes and understand your thought patterns. Together, we will work on developing effective coping strategies while deepening your self-awareness and understanding of your challenges.

Counselling often involves discussing difficult emotions and painful memories. While this process can feel overwhelming at first and may temporarily heighten discomfort, it is a vital step toward healing and personal growth. Over time, you will begin to experience relief and progress.

It’s important to note that resolving deep-seated issues typically requires more than a single session. Counselling is a journey built on trust, consistency, and a strong therapeutic relationship. To achieve meaningful results, I recommend committing to at least six sessions to fully benefit from the process.

I provide counselling to young children using creative therapies, including one of the most effective approaches—sand tray therapy.

Sand tray therapy allows clients to express non-verbalised emotional issues in a safe and creative way. It serves as a vital communication tool for individuals with limited verbal skills, reducing verbal defensiveness. This therapy is particularly beneficial for clients who are introverted, struggle to articulate their feelings.

While sand tray therapy is traditionally associated with children, it has been successfully adapted for use with adolescents, adults, and families, offering a versatile and impactful therapeutic experience.

In addition, I offer Islamic counselling, a therapeutic approach that integrates spirituality and Islamic principles. This form of counselling is rooted in an Islamic understanding of human nature, providing a holistic framework for addressing emotional and psychological challenges.

Practice description

I am trained in trauma and attachment treatment with the Attachment and Trauma Treatment Centre for Healing (ATTCH) in Canada.

Why is Trauma Intervention Needed and Who is it For?

Individuals of all ages can experience trauma, including infants and children. Even when we do not consciously recall our trauma experiences (because of our age or protective functions such as repression) our body holds memory, as does our mind. Trauma is a sensory experience and, regardless of the level of perceived intensity of effect on an individual, treatment promotes resilience later in life.

Treatment focuses not on avoiding unpleasant or uncomfortable emotions but rather on building awareness and tolerance to hold these emotions and reflect on them with compassion. As a result, the strategies we use focus on regulating the nervous system which is very important to ongoing resiliency and optimal development. To do so we incorporate mindfulness meditation yoga and various other holistic wellness practices to increase attention span, regulate the body and mind, and optimize the individual’s ability to regulate their emotions and behaviours. Current neurocisence research is demonstrating that mindfulness is changing the brain in the areas most effected by trauma (van der Kolk, 2014).
