About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I'm Joanne and I am a fully qualified, and BACP Accredited Counsellor and Supervisor working with individuals, young people, children and couples.
At the present time I am offering counselling face-to-face (in St Albans), on-line via Zoom and by telephone. I have a safe, supportive, and confidential space (with convenient off road parking) in my home in St Albans.
Sometimes we can find ourselves stuck at a crossroad or weighed down with thoughts and feelings that can become confusing and overwhelming. It may be difficult for us to share some of our struggles with our friends and family and so seeking the help of a non-judgemental, empathic counsellor can be very therapeutic.
I am an Integrative Counsellor, which means I use skills from several schools of psychotherapy. Along side my private practice I have also been employed as a Counsellor at Youth Talk and Signpost - counselling services for young people. I have also worked at Bereavement Matters and volunteered as a Supervisor with Cruse Bereavement Support. I have extensive experience working with relationships, bereavement and matters affecting young people and children. I am continually training and gaining new skills.
Please email me at contact@jomarkscounselling.co.uk or telephone on 07802881267. If you reach my confidential voicemail please note that I do check my phone regularly and will get back to you ASAP.
Practice description
I am a warm and empathic Therapist and Supervisor. I work with adults, young people, children and couples. I work in a creative way that can be adapted for each client's individual needs and offer tools which may help to gain awareness of unconscious patterns and behaviours and support my client going forward. I also offer mindfulness meditation guidance for those clients who are interested in including this helpful practice into their lives.
When working with couples I offer an individually tailored six fortnightly educational coaching programme for couples. Sometimes couples come as a last hope before deciding to separate as they find themselves in a relationship that is full of endless arguments, a feeling of disconnect and coldness resulting in feelings of rejection, hurt and anger. Others come as they may find themselves “stuck in a rut” with poor communication and feeling their individual needs are not being met.
A breakdown in relationships can happen for many reasons e.g. lack of trust, adjusting to parenthood, teenagers or empty nests, power struggles, loss of sexual comnnection.
There is hope for relationships once we learn where to put our energy and we will draw from the research and experience of relationship experts learning to develop tools and new communication skills. Together agreeing upon and setting a clear direction for change. Moving forward rekindling all that was good and emerging with a refreshed and enhanced new relationship.
My first session
Please contact me with your name, email address and availability. I will then come back to you with some initial appointment options. This initial session will be 30 minutes long (fee is £40 or £50 for couples) so we can meet to discuss your needs further and see if I am the right therapist for you. If I think a colleague could be more helpful for your needs I will help you make a referral.

About me and my therapy practice
I aim to bring nurturing, supportive and empathic qualities to my role as Supervisor and offer integrative supervision to students, newly qualified and experienced counsellors working in and setting up a private practice. I have considerable experience working in areas that affect young people, bereavement/loss, anxiety, low self-esteem, depression and relationship issues. I have experience of working with both individuals and couples. My approach is based mainly on psychodynamic, person centered and transpersonal theories and I work creatively weaving in CBT, mindfulness and guided-visualisation techniques.
Basing my supervision practice on the respected theory of Hawkins & Shohet, using the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice and having supervision of supervision, I aim to work with my supervisee's individual needs in order to support them with their client work, continued personal development and self-care.
I hold the Level 6 Certificate in Therapeutic Counselling Supervision (CPCAB) Qualification. I have worked as a volunteer Supervisor for CRUSE Bereavement Support.
