About me and my therapy practice
I hold an MSc in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and BSc in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. My area of expertise is anxiety, burnout and emotional overwhelm. Anxiety has a way of presenting itself in so many ways, it could be drinking more than you normally would just to take the edge off, sleep disturbance (waking up in the middle of the night with a racing head) feeling on-edge or not wanting to socialise. Often anxiety and stress can come out sideways in outbursts of anger and frustration leaving you feeling shame and remorse. It can feel quite isolating and hard to talk about with those around us, not wanting to burden them or appear weak or unable to cope. I understand this all too well because I've been there. As an Integrative therapist with over 15 years in the field of mental health, I support individuals with problems not just around stress but other issues such as addiction, anger management, bereavement, cultural tension within the family, depression, grief, lack of direction, & mother & daughter conflict. All these presenting issues have a similar theme, they tend to leave the individual feeling overwhelmed. I also work with clients who struggle to know what's wrong with them. I help them to begin to find the words to help them understand and move forwards in their lives.
Practice description
My initial training within the NHS for several years, has given me a solid foundation of experience and has helped me develop my own practice, which has evolved into a more holistic way of working with my clients. In other words, I use different methods to suit your needs and meet you where you are. It might be that you need some tools that involve CBT or breath work to help manage anxiety following on with some psychodynamic work that can help shed light on unconscious behaviour, that only adds to difficulties. I offer both short term and longer-term, open-ended therapy depending on your needs. My aim is the explore with you underlying beliefs, judgements and defences which shape how you experience yourself and your relationships. This can help you gain insight in how the past continues to influence you now. Integrative therapy can be long or short term. An ongoing weekly commitment offers you an opportunity to be heard and deeply supported as you learn to tolerate feelings and experiences that have seemed unfamiliar or unbearable. As the therapeutic process unfolds, we also focus on what is thriving.
My first session
The first session lasts for an hour and is a good place to start for me to better understand your concerns. In the session I'll ask some questions about what brings you to therapy and what you would like to achieve. It might be you feel unsure about what it is you're feeling. Thats ok - my job is to help you gain a deeper understanding and find words for your experience, in order for you to help find healthier solutions to move forward. The first session is also an opportunity for us to think about how you can be best supported, in the changes you may have to consider or make going forward. The important thing to remember is that you’ve made the first step towards change and that’s a shift.
