About me and my therapy practice

"Between the idea and the reality...Falls the shadow". TS Eliot.

I get the shadow.

Sometimes Its hard to know what you feel, or how you feel - and even harder to express it - to yourself, never mind to someone else; my particular skill is in getting that and then helping you to get that.

Once the feelings are identified and understood, we are then able to unpick what it is that is actually going on and deal with it, in a way that feels comfortable and possible for you.

When you come to see me, the counselling session is about you, the focus is on you but I also bring myself to the session.

I can offer you structure and empathy, understanding and clarity of vision, combined with warmth, wit and honesty.I have worked as a counsellor for 12 years and have a very broad base and depth of experience.

I have worked particularly with trauma and sexual, physical and domestic abuse and unequal emotional relationships of all kinds.

I have worked with loss, bereavement , anxiety, low confidence and low self esteem and clients who just feel lost and don't know what it is they need, but know that they are not getting whatever that is.

I work with individuals and sometimes with groups and I am a qualified supervisor. I currently work via telephone and online in private practice, on a national counselling helpline and in employees assistance.

I work with integrity in a very open and honest way with whatever issues you would like to bring.

I work well with people of all backgrounds and class and I am not easily shocked.

About me and my therapy practice

I am an integrative supervisor, trained in Person Centred, Gestalt and a TA approach, please contact me if you wish to explore a potential supervisory relationship. I pride myself on being supportive and gently challenging whilst holding both you and the client in a three cornered relationship, where your expertise is respected and enhanced.

My supervision style is based on the seven- eyed supervision process model (Peter Hawkins and Robin Shoet) and my training was at the Manchester institute of Psychotherapy.

Supervision both giving and receiving it is an intellectual and emotional challenge. It provides a space to explore and reflect not just upon the client work or dynamic but to also examine what it challenges you as an individual with, being open to that challenge, is where the growth happens.

Learning, changing and growing is essential for our health as human beings, but becomes even more important when we carry the responsibility of working with and influencing often vulnerable others, who may be struggling to function, or relate to significant others in their own lives.

As a counsellor I recognise the essential skill of enabling change, of being a catalyst for enquiry and then for change. As a supervisor this works on two levels, in the room with the supervisee and then through their process with their client. This requires even more care and responsibility than the counselling process itself.

Practice description

I work with the seven –eyed supervision process model, where we focus on the client and what and how they present and on an exploration of the strategies and interventions used by the supervisee, the relationship between the client and the supervisee and also on focussing on the supervisee and on the supervisory relationship itself and finally on my own process as a supervisor and the wider context in which the supervision happens.

I think it is rare to find a supervisor who can challenge and support, but also allow you to be totally honest and vulnerable and who can support you both as a professional and an individual.

As a supervisor that is who I would hope to be and it is what I expect from my own supervision.

I am registered as both a Supervisor and Counsellor for Leeds Beckett University, Salford university, Leeds college and Kirklees college though I work with qualified and trainee counsellors.
