About me and my therapy practice
Drawing on 20 years experience working as a therapist with a diverse range of clients in many different settings, I believe I bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and understanding to the supervisory relationship. I offer supervision to both experienced therapists and those starting their journey as students. My style is collaborative, with a focus on creating a reflective, supportive environment that fosters growth and insight for the supervisee, but also for myself in my journey as supervisor.
As a Therapist , my own experience is specifically working with early childhood trauma and the area of child sexual abuse (CSA), sexual assault, and domestic violence (DV). In the last 10 years within my own practice, I have particular experience of working with emotional neglect in early childhood, or 'the ignored child' (K. Stauffer) and the negative impact on adult relationships. Working with shame has been a fundamental part of this process.
As a Supervisor, I am keen to support other therapists and trainees navigating a similar path, as I understand the unique demands and emotional toll it can take. My supervision is informed by this experience, with a particular focus on the importance of self-care for the therapist, as well as our ethical responsibility as therapists to ensure 'that our wellbeing is sufficient to sustain the quality of the work' (BACP - GPiA 088).
My career has spanned various settings, including short term therapy within the NHS, EAP and the voluntary/charitable sector. In the last 10 years, I have worked primarily in private practice providing longer term therapy, working with early traumatic experiences. This diverse background has equipped me to supervise therapists/trainees in a range of settings and modalities in both long and short term therapy.
I am increasingly working with therapists developing their own private practice and I enjoy guiding them through this transition, as this has mirrored my own journey as a therapist and supervisor.
Practice description
My approach:
My core therapy training (2002) is psychodynamic and this approach has underpinned much of my work with trauma and long term work with clients. This continues to inform my supervisory work with all modalities encouraging a deeper exploration of the dynamic between client, therapist and supervisor.
Therefore, in supervision, a supervisee will be encouraged to be curious about what might still be ‘carried’ (Hawkins and Shohet), both consciously and unconsciously, by the therapist into the supervision session. By being open to exploring the transference, counter-transference and parallel process in the supervision session, this helps us to have a deeper understanding of the work, not only between client-therapist but also between supervisee-supervisor.
Qualifications:
Diploma in Supervision - Leeds Centre for Psychological Development 2019/20
Further training scheduled (October 2024) - Counsellor to Coach Diploma
My first session
Initially, I encourage potential supervisees to contact me for a preliminary telephone discussion or video meeting.
The next step is usually an introductory session to discuss more fully your requirements for supervision, your experience and current supervisory needs, and any accreditation requirements. This also gives an opportunity to experience my way of working, and to help us decide if we would like to work together.
I currently supervise students and experienced therapists on a private basis, but in the past have worked as an associate supervisor.
Venue:
I supervise in person and remotely from my therapy room at home in Derbyshire. If attending in person, this provides a quiet, calm confidential setting with available parking.
