About me and my therapy practice

I studied at the Guild of Psychotherapists, which is a pluralistic psychotherapy training, teaching Psychoanalytic, Jungian and Phenomenological therapy and my supervisors and analysts came from the Guild, the SAP (a Jungian training) and the Institute of Psychoanalysis. I also trained as a Chartered Psychologist. This allows me to integrate these ways of working.

What have I taken from these traditions?

In a psychoanalytic way of working the therapist tries to understand the material the client brings to the session, such as; the underlying meaning of what the client says in the session, the content of dreams and the client's history going back to childhood. In this way the psychoanalytic therapist gains insight to what might be happening in the client's unconscious - particularly unhelpful defensive strategies, which might be impeding the client's ability to live their lives happily and fully.

The main ways Jungians diverged from psychoanalysts is by not pathologising the unconscious - seeing therapy more as a process of personal development than as a cure for an ailment. As part of this Jung embraced mystical traditions from India and China and he was very interested in creative play, visualisation and dreams as ways of self exploration. He encouraged clients to become the best version of themselves - to individuate and he was very tolerant of the altered states of consciousness sometimes experienced during processes of individuation.

As a Chartered Psychologist, I offer within the therapy practical methods of personal development, such as; stress management, self hypnosis and visualisation. Due to my experience as a Chartered Psychologist, working in the NHS as a clinician and a head of services, I am experienced in working with a wide range of client difficulties. As a psychologist, I have taken a keen interest in Neuro-diversity. The main forms this I come across in my work are the following;

Dyslexia

Visual stress

High sensitivity

Sensory hypersensitivity

Adult ADHD

Practice description

I qualified as a Psychodynamic Counsellor in 1989, as a Chartered Psychologist in 1996, as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist in 2000 & as a Psychoanalytic Supervisor in 2001. I have had a private counselling & psychotherapy practice since 1990 and I've been a Visiting Professor, teaching psychoanalytic psychotherapy at Masaryk University in the Czech Republic since 2009.I’m therefore a Jungian and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist and Chartered Psychologist.

Psychoanalytic & Jungian Psychotherapy

I work using a combination of Jungian and Psychoanalytic theories. This combination is quite common in the UK and is a method of therapy which aims to increase self understanding and emotional literacy. It therefore helps clients to become less controlled by their past and thus become more honestly self aware and so make better decisions about their lives and to optimise their possibilities for self development.

Couple Counselling

I provide counselling for couples, both straight and gay, who are experiencing trouble in their relationship. This sometimes results in people developing and salvaging a strained relationship and sometimes it results in people concluding that the relationship is not a good enough fit and that they would be better off separating.

Stress Management

This is generally provided during the process of therapy and includes teaching stress management, relaxation techniques, mindfulness, meditation & visualisation. There is a page on Stress Management, Meditation & Visualisation on this website.

Supervision

I also provide supervision for psychotherapists, counsellors, psychologists & psychiatrists - both students and fully qualified therapists and you are welcome to contact me to discuss this further. The way I work is roughly similar to that outlined in Patrick Casement's book "On Learning from the Patient" If you have any questions about how I work or how I can help, please get in touch.

My first session

I provide supervision by Skype, FaceTime, Signal and Phone.

The theoretical model I use is Jungian and psychoanalytic. I have extensive experience of working in private practice and in the NHS. I tend to prefer a way of working not dissimilar to that described in Patrick Casement's book, " On Learning from the Patient" - in other words, a modern British Object Relations approach, favouring the work of Winnicott and Bion, but with a Jungian slant to it. However, because I have worked extensively in the NHS, I am pragmatic in my approach. I teach clients stress reduction skills. I place a strong emphasis on keeping the therapist and patient safe. This means, for example, not having too many very disturbed people in your practice at any one time and conducting rigorous risk assessments.
