Availability

I work in East Wittering, there is ample parking. I work either face-to-face, on Zoom, or can offer a combination of both.

About me and my therapy practice

I offer supervision to counsellors working with children and young people. Working with children and young people requires a great deal of creativity and a child centered approach and over my years of practice, this is a skill I have developed well and contributes to my strength as a supervisor.

I view supervision as a vehicle for learning through a process of professional support. Good supervision needs a good working relationship as a foundation. It is important that you find the right fit.

As a supervisor, my aim is to enable you to develop knowledge and competence, enhance your professional practice by providing an exploratory space for you to reflect on your work, explore ethical and safeguarding issues and feel supported with guidance, encouragement as well as being gently challenged in order to facilitate growth throughout your process. I will encourage you to self-assess, as well as develop your analytical and reflective skills.

Practice description

I am an experienced, Clinical Supervisor and BACP registered Integrative Therapist, specialising in work with children and young people. I have worked for the charity Place2Be for many years, offering supervision to Counsellors, both experienced and trainee, working with children in both primary and secondary schools. Alongside this role I run a private practice as a Child & Young Person's Therapist and as a Supervisor.

I work as a Clinical Supervisor with both qualified Counsellors and Counsellors in training and also provide supervision for other therapeutic practitioners (including pastoral care workers, designated safeguarding leads, etc.)

My first session

I offer an initial 15 minute free zoom session. We shall get to know each other, talk about your needs and decide whether we can work well together, since, as in therapy, our relationship is the most important aspect of the process.

About me and my therapy practice

My heart lies with helping children and young people to thrive. I am passionate about and a firm believer in early intervention. I am an integrative children's and young people's therapist. I have a gentle and calm approach; I understand how daunting it can be for children and young people to come for therapy.

I work with children and young people aged 5 to 25.

Through my experience working in schools, I have seen how young people’s emotional state and struggles can often impact heavily on their ability to learn and thrive in the school environment.

With all ages, I place great importance on building a trusting empathic therapeutic relationship and creating a safe and confidential environment where children and young people are accepted and valued as they are, allowing them to explore, process and express feelings, build confidence and to develop resilience and self-reflection.  Exploring issues and life experiences that are preventing children and young people from reaching their full potential or causing emotional difficulties.

Passionate about children and young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing. I started as a volunteer counsellor for Childline. My experience includes working for a local counselling charity with young people aged 12-25 years old. Specific experience working with vulnerable children and young people with complex issues, in a special needs SEMH (social emotional and Mental Health) Secondary school. Experience as a children's counsellor with Place2Be, a leading provider of support for children's mental health running 2 projects within a primary and secondary school with children and young people aged 5 to 18 years old.

My own life experiences have led me on this journey, I believe that having a safe space where you are attuned to and understood allows a child/young person to explore and understand their feelings and to recognise and change unhelpful patterns of behaviour.

Practice description

As an integrative therapist, as every child is unique, I use a range of therapeutic approaches in order to assess how best to support the young person in their therapy journey.

As an integrative therapist I am:

• psychodynamic in my thinking i.e. I think about what is being communicated unconsciously as well as literally;

• person centred in that I place a high value on the relationship between therapist and the client

• systemic in thinking about the child or young person in the context of his/her family.

• creative in the way I use play therapy as a springboard for telling stories or unlocking memories that may reveal messages and beliefs from the unconscious mind.

Sometimes children begin to experience tensions and difficulties that they struggle to understand or explain. Often this is expressed in behaviour that is challenging or confusing for the adults in their world.

I use creative and playful mediums to suit the development needs of every individual young person, allowing the young person to feel safe and secure in exploring their thoughts and feelings. I listen and pay attention to what they are saying verbally and non-verbally. To be truly heard and emotionally met where you are at can be a powerful and restorative experience for most children and young people.

I have worked with young people from a wide range of different backgrounds and different family experiences, who have been experiencing and living with a wide variety of issues.

Often, therapeutic support early in life can help a child/young person process and make greater sense of their internal and external struggles and lead to a greater capacity to embrace life not only as children/young people but also into adulthood.

Sessions are held in my practice within Horsenden Children's Centre, Greenford.

I am able to provide online counselling to children over the age of 12, if appropriate.

My first session

For children 16 years and under: initially I will have a free of charge 20-minute phone conversation with the parent/carer/guardian to get a picture of the child's life and any particular issues. The child can choose to be present at this phone call if they wish.

For young people over 17 years: I will have a free of charge 20-minute phone call to do a brief assessment of issues.

After this we can book in for a face to face or online initial session for a full assessment.

Children and teenagers attend the initial session with a parent or caregiver. The initial session is to determine whether I feel I can support your child moving forward, and whether your child is comfortable with me and in the therapy room or online. It is an opportunity for your child to see what counselling is all about and whether they feel it is something they are happy to commit to.

In this initial session we will discuss the importance for providing privacy in sessions for your child, safeguarding guidelines and the format for ongoing therapy, with regular reviews and feedback agreed where required.  The limits of confidentiality are explained and questions or concerns addressed.

After this, if you, your child and myself agree that counselling could be of benefit for your child, then sessions are once a week, at the same time and day each week.

Parents will be asked to sign a parental consent form before sessions can commence.

Clients aged 18-25 may choose to attend the initial session with a trusted friend, adult or family member or may wish to attend on their own

This assessment may take an hour and will be charged at my normal rate.
