About me and my therapy practice
Relationship Counselling:
Many relationships struggle due to non-communication, infidelity, and intimacy issues. You may feel uncomfortable having these conversations with your partner and require a mutual space with a qualified therapist to work through this. Therapy can help you to work through issues with your partner and improve communication in a safe non judgemental space.
Narcissistic Abuse:
I specialise in working with survivors of narcissistic abuse after my own lived experience of this abuse through what I believe was an estranged parent, sibling and a previous ex-partner. Therapy can help you recognise what you have experienced and support you in reclaiming your self-worth and self-esteem, putting those boundaries in place and changing the messages you have received about yourself based on other people's behaviours towards you.
Anxiety:
Anxiety is the name given to the feelings we feel when our body/brain is telling us we are in danger, it is normal to have these feelings when we sense danger. Our body is flooded with chemicals when adrenaline is pumped into our system which causes a fast heart rate and other physical symptoms of anxiety. The problem with anxiety is that our brain does not know the difference between present danger, the memory of danger or any negative thoughts we may be having which make us feel we are in danger. Therapy can help you to recognise these thoughts and negative thinking patterns and work with you to put strategies and coping mechanisms in place to manage them,
Practice description
I specialise in working with survivors of narcissistic abuse and childhood trauma after my own lived experience of this abuse for 15 years.
I offer a safe supportive space where we can explore your feelings and what is causing you to seek therapy. I am an integrative therapist and some of the theories I use are Psychodynamic, CBT, Trauma therapy and Solution Focused Therapy. I have extensive experience in working with clients with anxiety, social anxiety, depression, low mood, low self esteem, self harm, suicidal ideation, trauma, anger, couples counselling and family issues.
We work at your pace to explore why you have come to therapy and what you want to gain from sessions and put a working plan in place that works for you so that you can start to feel in control of your life and make the changes you want to make.
The therapeutic relationship is the most important thing when coming to therapy so I offer a safe, non judgemental and relaxed space where you are able to feel safe enough to share what is causing you distress.
I work with clients for either long and short-term face to face or online therapy. Short term therapy can be for 6 – 12 sessions and can focus on CBT techniques to give you the tools and strategies you can incorporate into your life. Long term therapy is over a longer period of time and uses psychodynamic therapy to explore your past experiences and help you to understand the influence of your past on your present behaviour and find new ways for you to change the behaviours that no longer benefit you. Psychodynamic therapy focuses on your unconscious (hidden from your awareness) or relationship patterns that evolve from childhood.
I am a member of the BACP and I adhere to the BACP ethical standards and continue to work within their framework and code of ethics. I have regular monthly supervision and continue to attend up to date training to enhance my counselling toolkit.

Critical Incident Stress Debrief sessions are held at the employers premises. Please contact me for further information.
About me and my therapy practice
JHCounselling Services offers critical incident stress debriefing to companies where staff may have been affected by aggressive customers, staff may witness clients or colleagues self-harming or those having suicidal ideation or taking their own lives. You are required by law to put in place measures to protect your staff from psychological injury.
One of the interventions that we have put in place to achieve this, is offering debriefing following a critical incident.
WHAT IS A CRITICAL INCIDENT?
Critical incidents can be defined as events or situations ‘that have sufficient emotional power to overcome the usual coping abilities of people, even those working in environments where some degree of exposure is expected’, (Mitchell & Bray, 1990).
Such incidents fall outside normal working routines, pose a significant threat to the participants &/or others, or they include factors likely to increase their stressful nature.
These may be single events, a protracted period of difficulty (as with the Covid 19 pandemic), or a series of less intense occurrences in succession.
Critical incidents are characterised by demands for which staff may not have been prepared, go beyond their role specifications, or are outside their normal routine.
A critical incident may create a significant risk of harm to the mental health or well-being of an employee.

GOALS OF THE POST CRITICAL INCIDENT STRESS DEBRIEF
P-CISD aims to:
• Reduce & process feelings of distress in order to mitigate the impact
The word process is often used but often not understood – A psychological process is a series of steps or mechanisms that occur within a framework - Sensations felt, perceptions, memories, thinking, motivations and emotions are considered as key psychological processes.
• Normalise common thoughts, feelings and behaviours that follow a critical incident so that they do not think that they alone are thinking, feeling or behaving in this way and therefore hide their thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Often because they feel they should not be having them, they are ‘weak’ or ‘crazy.’
• Restore adaptive functions in psychologically healthy people who are distressed by an unusually disturbing event
• Restore group cohesion
• Help restore pre-incident levels of performance
• Screening opportunity to identify group members who might benefit from additional support services or a referral for professional care
• Demonstrate organisational and management acknowledgement of the incident or ongoing high stress incidents and to demonstrate their support
