About me and my therapy practice

I will work with you to develop your own authentic way of working, developing your own strengths and preferences in your client work, to help you take ownership of your practice and better serve your clients. I work in an integrative way, with a person centred and relational core, believing that the relationship between us is an essential component of supervision, and where most of the work is done. I am happy to work with you in person at my therapy room in the centre of York, as well as remotely via Zoom or telephone.

Practice description

I work with a range of clients, including adults, teens and young people. I am also experienced in working remotely and am qualified to supervise this aspect of your client work. I have a particular interest in working with neurodiverse clients with autism, ADHD, or dyspraxia, either with a self- diagnosis or officially diagnosed. I can also supervise any work you have with this client group, which, although has commonalities with counselling neurotypical clients, can present specific differences which will affect how you work. I am happy to support your practice, whether you are in the early stages of your career or are a more experienced therapist, and I supervise with reference to the BACP Ethical Framework. With a background in training and teaching, as well as a first degree in Psychology, I am well placed to support your theoretical knowledge development as well as your client work and will offer encouragement and praise as well as appropriate challenge. I am happy to work with you on an on-going basis. I also offer additional ad-hoc supervision sessions as a supplement to your regular supervision to support your work with neurodiverse clients a, cover absences in your regular supervision, or act in an interim capacity if you are needing to sort out changes in your regular supervision.

My first session

I am happy to have a free initial, no obligation, meeting with you, either in person or remotely, to discuss your supervision needs and help us decide if we would be a good fit for each other. Please get in touch if you would like to arrange this.

About me and my therapy practice

Life can be hard at times. We can experience loss, changes in our health, family circumstances or work life. Maybe our relationships are not fulfilling our needs and we do not know how to change things. At times, we don’t feel good about ourselves, we lose confidence in our ability to cope with life or maybe we feel impacted by past experiences or held back through feelings of anger, shame or guilt. Sometimes we don’t know what’s wrong, but we just know something isn’t right.

I will help you to explore how you feel, giving you a safe space to talk and be heard. I work in a humanistic way, which means that I have the belief that you have the capacity to find your own answers, although you are needing some help to work them out. I draw on a range of counselling and psychological theories to help me to help you find solutions to whatever is troubling you and make the changes that feel right for you.

I like to work collaboratively, and I welcome feedback about what is or isn't working for you so that you can get the most benefit from our sessions. I work with a wide range of difficulties and am happy to work with you with whatever you choose to bring to our sessions. I welcome autistic clients, those with ADHD, or other neurodiversity, whether formally or self diagnosed, and have additional training and experience in this area.

I hold a masters degree in counselling and post-graduate diploma in counselling both from York St John University. I do some counselling work for Open Minds Counselling Service, Doncaster and am a trustee at 121 Counselling in York.

Practice description

I am able to offer face to face, online and telephone sessions, and have undertaken additional training in remote counselling. This gives you more choice over when and how our sessions take place, and may be particularly useful if you have work or caring commitments. Face to face counselling takes place in the centre of York, in my calm, welcoming therapy room. Online counselling takes place over secure video conferencing. Please contact me if you would like to discuss which mode of counselling would suit you best. Note: Please be aware that access to my therapy room is via stairs.

All data is held securely and I am registered with the Information Commissioners Office and I adhere to GDPR regulations. I also have a current Enhanced DBS and am fully insured.

My first session

It is very important that you choose to work with a counsellor you feel comfortable with. In fact I would say it is essential because most of the benefit of therapy comes from the relationship between you and your therapist, rather than through particular techniques or types of therapy. With this in mind, I offer a free 20 minute telephone consultation where we can start to get to know each other and I can answer any questions you may have.

If you decide you would like to try working with me, at our first session I will explain all about counselling and go though our counselling contract to make sure you are happy with it and want to go ahead with the session. I also will ask you a few simple questions about yourself, just to give me a bit of background and help me understand you and your difficulties better. I will then invite you to tell me something about what has brought you to counselling, and what you hope to get out of it. This will help me decide which ways of working may be most helpful to you. You are free to bring anything you want to the session, or even to be unsure where to start. The main purpose of our first session is for us to start to get to know each other and to begin to form our all important counselling relationship. I want you be able to feel you are in a safe enough place to talk about whatever is troubling you, even if it is difficult, but I recognise it takes time to build that trust in your counsellor. Hopefully, the first session will begin to put you at ease about how we will work together.
