About me and my therapy practice
Hi I'm Angela. Are you feeling weighed down with anxiety and stress? There are times when we all experience anxiety and emotional distress, feel stuck, lost or unhappy in everyday life. I specialise in working with women of all ages (18+) who are struggling in particular with anxiety, burnout and compassion fatigue, depression, bereavement and loss.
I believe that every individual is unique and has inherent value and worth with a longing and need to feel safe, significant and be known. With this in mind our work together will be unique as I invite you to share ‘your story’; those struggles and painful experiences of the past or present that have brought you into counselling today.
My desire is to offer you a counselling relationship where your voice will be heard and understood. Together we will explore more deeply the impact of your experiences and narratives; those thoughts and beliefs that have now become a stumbling block and hindrance, preventing you from living life in its fullness today.
As your counsellor I will never tell you what to do, but together in therapy you can gain a deeper awareness of who you are, a clearer perspective, and the confidence to make healthy positive choices and changes to your life.
Counselling qualification and Experience
In 2016 I achieved a 1st class (BSc Hons) degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy with the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute in Nottingham (validated by Staffordshire University).
I now have 10 years counselling experience which began in 2014 as a trainee and volunteer at a variety of local settings; including the Haven, PACE Counselling, and Welbeck 6th form college.
From 2016 to present - I have run my own private practice.
From 2020 to 2024 - Voluntary position: Lead Counsellor for a low cost counselling service in Leicestershire managing a team of trainees and counsellors.
I am a registered member of the bacp (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy).
Practice description
I am now working with clients (in person) face to face.
What happens after you send me an email enquiry:
Following your email enquiry I will reply to you as soon as I am able to and arrange a mutually convenient (brief) telephone call to find out a little more about you and what you are needing from counselling at this time. I will also share in more detail how I work and the theories I draw on.
This initial brief call is free of charge. If after this conversation you would like to proceed with an assessment meeting we can then arrange a date and time to do that (in person).
I believe it is really important that you find the right Counsellor for you, so in order to facilitate that, I offer a reduced fee for the initial assessment, (which is not a counselling session). As part of the assessment I will ask you a number of questions so that I can understand a little more about you and what brings you to counselling at this time. Some questions include; your home address, date of birth, medical background, support agencies and networks, ways you self-care, etc. This time will also help me to assess if my experience and counselling training/approach will be of benefit to you, and importantly too, it is also an opportunity for you to decide if we can work well together or whether you prefer to look for another counsellor.
The assessment can take up to 50 mins and I charge £25 for this meeting.
I offer counselling sessions (initially) on a weekly basis; I find this is especially helpful at the beginning of our time together so that I can really get to know you.
I work on a short and longer term basis.
My first session
The First counselling session:
If after the assessment meeting you would like to go ahead and begin counselling with me we can then arrange a date/time that is mutually convenient.
At the start of the first counselling session I will explain the ‘counselling contract’ or what I prefer to call our ‘working agreement’; which outlines how we will work together and covers things like the boundaries of confidentiality, how and where I will securely store your information, what happens if you need to cancel a session.
Each counselling session is 50 mins and ends within 1 hour.
What following sessions may look like:
At the start of each session I may ask; 'how are you?' or 'how would you like to use your time today'? Our work together is very much led by what you would like to bring; the more you bring the more we can work with. However, as your counsellor I will endeavour to support you to express yourself as I listen really carefully to what you are saying. I will check in with you during our sessions to ask how you are managing with the pace of our work to ensure you are not feeling overwhelmed or rushed.
As your counsellor I will never tell you what you should do, but can help you to explore different viewpoints or options, and be alongside you as you try out different and new ways of re-thinking and being you in your world.
