About me and my therapy practice

Hello and thank you for taking the time to view my profile.

I qualified to practice in 2002 and from there I worked full time as a Counsellor for the Worcestershire Community Alcohol service. I worked in this role for ten years, with clients where the presenting issue was alcohol misuse, however there were many other issues clients struggled with, such as Depression, Anxiety, Low Self Esteem.... I have extensive experience of successfully working with clients to achieve significant positive lifestyle changes and to reach their goals. Since leaving this service, I have worked in a variety of therapeutic settings, gaining more and varied experience.

I will work with you, to explore the best way forward for you to achieve the necessary changes you want/need to make. I will not tell you what to do, but gently encourage and help you to find the confidence within yourself to take the steps towards your new you!

These are your sessions and I will work with what you choose to bring into the sessions. However, I see Counselling as a way for you to begin to look at yourself and your life and experiences from a different perspective, through a process of exploration and reflection, this process will help you to see that change is possible.

Practice description

As a practicing Humanistic Counsellor....... I aim to recognise your a uniqueness and that you will have an innate capacity to grow emotionally and psychologically towards positive changes and your goals, given the right conditions.

I believe that it is not the events in your life that cause you problems, but how you view them and therefore experience those events.

So, how you experience life events will have an impact on how you feel about yourself and in turn, influence your self-esteem and self confidence.

I will work with you in a way that you will feel encouraged to learn to understand how your negative responses to life events can lead to psychological discomfort.

My aim will be to help you explore your own thoughts and feelings and for you to work out your own solutions.

Psychologist Carl Rogers developed one of the most commonly used humanistic therapies, Client-Centred Counselling or Person Centred Counselling, which encourages you to concentrate on how you feel in the present moment.

The central belief is that you have the inherent resources that will enable you to deal with and manage whatever life brings to you.

As a Client-centred therapist I will focus on my belief that you - and not myself - are the best expert on your own thoughts, feelings, experiences and problems and therefore it is you who is most capable of finding the right solutions for you!

I will not suggest any particular course of action for you to take, make any recommendations, or try to interpret anything you say. The responsibility for working out your problems will rest wholly with you.

My aim will be to reflect and clarify what you bring into the session.

Enabling you to discover the right course of action for you to take, towards a more positive and fulfilling life.

My first session

Your first session will give you the opportunity to discover if you feel comfortable working with me and that counselling is the best way forward for you.....and for me it gives the opportunity to find out what brings you to counselling and if I can help you work towards and achieve your goals.

There will be a set of questions we will work through and I will record your responses. In our final session we will revisit the questions and compare your responses, with a view to evidencing positive changes for you.

The first session can be a little draining for some, therefore I would suggest not having many commitments after your session if possible .

Towards the end of your first session we will discuss what your hopes are from working with me and you will set a goal or goals to start thinking about and working towards.

I say this to all of my new clients, change does not happen in our sessions, rather it starts to happen in between our sessions and that is down to you.....
