About me and my therapy practice

My name is Joan. I am a caring and compassionate counsellor. I specialise in working with children (4-11) particularly in the area of trauma. My other area of expertise is bereavement counselling. I am committed to providing a safe and welcoming space where children and adults feel comfortable to open up and share their feelings and thoughts, without fear of judgment, as I help them move forward. 

Practice description

Over 35 years’ experience supporting children in a pastoral role in a Primary School setting

Achieved CPCAB Level 5 in Post Qualifying Diploma in Trauma Informed Therapeutic practice working with Children and Young People

Extensive Experience working in Primary Schools as a children’s counsellor including the Department of Education’s ‘Healthy Happy Minds’ programme 2021-2023

Practice as an integrative counsellor – I acknowledge that every client is unique and adapt provision to meet each client’s individual needs

Use play and creative methods work to encourage and empower children to explore and express their feelings, thoughts and actions alongside an adult who is able to listen and understand what they are saying both verbally and non-verbally. Being heard, understood and met emotionally can be a powerful and restorative experience

Qualified in grief counselling. I trained with CRUSE NI and supported both adults and children with bereavement and loss as a Bereavement Support Volunteer

Attained BACP Accreditation -demonstrating a high standard of knowledge, experience and development and recognising my capacity for independent, ethical and competent practice

Experience working with adults, children and young people with a range of issues including grief, anger, anxiety, depression, emotional regulation and stress as well as relationship and family issues

My first session

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and to carry out an assessment of needs and expectations.

I offer a reduced rate for the introductory session
