About me and my therapy practice
Accredited, 20 + years practice: anxiety, paranoia, GAD, depression, bereavement, trauma, redundancy, stress, power struggles and other work-related issues. PTSD, OCD, phobias, anger, eating disorders, personality disorders, addictions, alcohol and substance abuse, compulsive lying, codependency: taking too much responsibility for the actions or well-being of others, feeling overwhelmed as if too many people depend on you, emotional, physical and sexual abuse, affairs and betrayals, gambling and gaming.
I facilitate programmes of support for parents, family and couple dynamics facing all types of relationship issues including adult children of alcoholics and the consequences of falling into financial debt.
You will find a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space where you can share and explore present and past experiences, express thoughts and feelings becoming assertive, gaining personal awareness and strength, improving quality of life, robust mental health, a sense of well-being and positive relationships with friends, parents, siblings, children and work.
“Life begins on the other side of despair" Jean-Paul Sartre.
I believe each of us is unique with the potential for growth and development in order to become assertive and move forward in our own way. Your motivation to change and our client-therapist relationship provides the relational space for healing.
Practice description
My practice is underpinned by humanistic-existential philosophy integrating interventions including cognitive behavioural therapy [CBT], schema therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy [DBT], transactional analysis [TA], psychodynamic, person-centred, gestalt, transpersonal and mindfulness based approaches.
Additionally I am an Advanced Practitioner in the field of addiction registered with Addiction Professionals: https://www.addictionprofessionals.org.uk/advanced-practitioner-amanda-perl
My first session
How do I begin therapy?
The first courageous step is to make contact and arrange a time that we can talk through your concerns. This one hour "Assessment Appointment" is a starting point for the process. Assessment is not clinical in the same way as attending a GP or hospital, neither is it interrogative, intrusive or unnecessarily invasive; it is simply a space to recall a little of your history prior to choosing to seek help and provides a platform for us to decide how best we might work together going forwards. We will cover confidentiality [NB Notes are not stored online. Notes are handwritten, stored and securely archived] receive a clear overview of the options available, discover the therapist’s philosophy and what therapy in practice really looks like. If we decide we are a fit and choose to continue, a planned pathway is shaped and review takes place approximately every six weeks.
Please note that although you may experience a range of feelings, the first session is for assessment only and no therapy takes place.
