About me and my therapy practice
I am interested in exploring the impact of anxiety, trauma and emotional distress from both psychological and physical perspectives. In therapy we might try to identify what it is that sparks bouts of anxiety, how it manifests in your body and to explore how you experience the emotional impact of the anxiety. Most importantly if you just need to talk I will be there to listen. The therapy must be at your pace.
I believe that each person’s story is unique regardless of common experiences and symptoms.
Often patterns of behavior develop as coping strategies to survive your experiences. Some of these strategies may have become redundant and unhelpful. Being out of balance within yourself can result in feelings of being “not good enough”, being fearful or being isolated or out of control.
I attend multiple trainings every year that describe and evidence the value of integrating a mind body approach into therapeutic practice. I am acutely aware of how many of us have been affected by trauma of some kind which may have unconsciously influenced the way we respond to others in present day to day situations. These experiences may have been bullying, shaming, sexual or domestic abuse, or simply never having had your emotional needs met.
I am also aware that sometimes there does not seem to be anything in your history which may have resulted in your present anxiety. This too we can explore in therapy.
As an experienced Psychotherapist I have accumulated many grounding and other techniques which can contribute to the process of taking control of and managing anxiety. It is important to me that you have autonomy in the room so that you can use the safe space to challenge or express ideas which might normally be too difficult for you.
Practice description
I offer weekly face to face, online or telephone therapy.
I offer a confidential and safe space where you can talk about things that concern you without feeling as though you will be judged. I am conscious that sometimes talking about family or friends may feel like a betrayal or disloyalty. The therapy room is a space to hear yourself say things out loud and think them through without impacting your relationships.
I have significant experience of working with anxiety, trauma, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex post traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD), child sexual abuse, adult sexual abuse, and domestic abuse and am fully cognizant of how these kinds of experiences can manifest in feelings of low self esteem, being “not good enough” or even being an “imposter.” Some of the behaviors associated with these feelings include anger or rage, self harm, disordered eating and even thoughts of suicide. I can be with you to talk about these things in a safe and non-judgemental space.
For me the quality of the therapeutic relationship is absolutely key to the whole process. Trust can only be established in an environment where you will not feel judged and where you feel you have autonomy in the room and where your voice is heard and respected in confidence.
It is not always an easy process, but I believe that we all have inner resources which are sometimes difficult to engage with on our own.
My first session
It is crucial that you feel at ease enough to commit to an initial session, so I like to have a short introductory (no fee) phone call to reduce any anxiety about the initial contact. I offer a reduced fee for the first session so that we can see whether we both feel that we can work together.
