The concept of post traumatic growth has become an increasingly recognised psychological phenomena in recent years.
The notion that constructive psychological change can emerge from traumatic experiences and life events isn’t new and has strong historical routes in religious and spiritual traditions.
We know that clients can experience a spiritual awakening following traumatic events. Some draw upon their spirituality to support them in the process of healing, while others may struggle to maintain their religious or spiritual beliefs.
In the face of persistent racial, social, or political trauma the idea of a ‘post’ traumatic state might itself be illusionary.
This event is hosted by the Spirituality division and will support you to critically explore the concept of post traumatic growth and its relationship with spirituality. It’ll also consider how spirituality might be a way to support clients emerging from traumatic experiences or help to bypass them.
Event aims
This main aims of this event are to:
- understand how we might perceive the phenomena of post-traumatic growth through the lens of spirituality
- reflect on the relationship between post-traumatic growth and spiritual awakenings or increase in spiritual or religious beliefs or practices in the face of trauma
- understand how religion or spirituality can be a source of support for clients with trauma but also how they might bypass dealing with traumatic experiences
- develop confidence and competence in working with post-traumatic growth and spirituality within the context of therapy
Programme
The event will begin at 9:30am and finish around 1:30pm.
